Make it Public campaign commitments continue
We celebrated #MakeitPublic week in March, a week dedicated to research transparency in the UK.
During the week, we published data on clinical trial registration, which shows that 92% of trials which received a favourable opinion from a Research Ethics Committee (REC) were registered on a publicly accessible database. And, for the first time, we included details on any explanations provided for non-registration of trials.
Our workshop addressing the barriers to registration was attended by people from across research, and we are now reviewing insights from the event to plan our next steps to support researchers to achieve 100% registration.
Our goal of making research transparency the norm continues beyond Make it Public week, and we are sharing best practice at an upcoming event for International Clinical Trials Day.
Blog: reflections on our Community Committee meetings
Our Community Committee was set up last year to advise the HRA Board. It is made up of members from across the HRA Community, which includes members of our Research Ethics Committees (RECs), Confidentiality Advisory Group (CAG), and the Public Involvement Network (PIN).
Jan Speechley is a member of the public on the Committee. Read her new blog with reflections on the most recent meeting and how she is looking forward to supporting the work of the HRA.
Our response to the ICO consultation on transparency
The ICO recently held a public consultation for input on new guidance to support health and social care organisations to be more transparent. We coordinated our response with public contributors from the Make it Public campaign group, which had a focus on public involvement.
New guidance has now been published on the ICO website. Our Deputy Director of Policy and Partnerships, Naho Yamazaki, shares her thoughts on the positive steps that have been taken towards transparency in the new standards.
