Welcome to HRA Latest, with news and updates for those working or involved in health and social care research.
This month, we were delighted to host Make it Public Week. During the week more than 100 people came together at our event on how to improve registration rates of clinical trials.
We're also pleased to announce a new pilot which we hope will streamline and speed up the process for approving studies that are part of the same programme of research.
You can also read about how we marked the second anniversary of our Shared Commitment to Public Involvement.

Make it Public Week 2024
Last week, we celebrated Make it Public Week 2024, a campaign dedicated to research transparency.
We focused on how all of those responsible for clinical trials can work together to increase registration rates, as the first, crucial step towards research transparency
Over 100 people attended our workshop to address the barriers to research registration, with representatives from across the research sector including universities, NHS organisations, and pharmaceutical companies.
The workshop included case studies on best practice and insights from those affected by research, such as Frances Mossie, patient contributor and research champion at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.
Clinical trial registration data published
Every year, we publish an audit on clinical trial registration data. For the first time this year during Make it Public week, we shared information on a trial-by-trial basis, including details of the sponsor organisation, full study title and any explanation for non-registration if it was provided.
It showed that in 2022, 92% of clinical trials in the UK were registered on a publicly accessible database, and indicated common themes amongst those not registered.
Read a blog by our Director of Policy and Partnerships, Naho Yamazaki, about this year’s data, and visit our website to see the details on the 1545 clinical trials audited.
New pilot to approve programmes of research
We're looking at whether it’s possible to streamline the approval process for sub-studies within a programme of research.
Our pilot project will involve Research Ethics Committees reviewing an overall study application. If it gets ethics approval, any sub studies connected to the main study don’t need to go through the same approvals process.
If you think that you have a programme of research which might be suitable for our pilot, please get in touch.
Call for comment on study template arrangement
We've worked in collaboration with the devolved administrations of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and the R&D Forum, on a new study agreement template.
The draft template is proposed for use between non-commercial sponsors and commercial organisations providing support for chief investigator initiated trials.
We are asking for feedback on the draft template and for suggestions to be shared before the deadline on 13 May 2024.
