Welcome to the first HRA Latest of 2024 with news and updates for those working or involved in health and social care research.
This month you can read about a consultation on revisions to the Declaration of Helsinki and how the Declaration informs our work.
You can also read about how we're getting ready for Make it Public Week, the UK’s dedicated week for research transparency.
I'm also pleased to share my blog on what the public thinks about health and social care research, based on the findings of our recent survey, Public Perceptions of Research.
As always, for regular updates and the latest news, you can follow us on X @HRA_Latest.

New consultation on the Declaration of Helsinki
We’re responding to a consultation on revisions to the Declaration of Helsinki.
The Declaration of Helsinki (DOH) is a statement of ethical principles for medical research involving humans. It was established in 1964 and is regarded as the most important document in the history of research ethics.
The consultation was recently launched by the World Medical Association to ensure the DOH continues to address evolving ethical global challenges.
Make it Public
Our Deputy Director of Policy and Partnerships, Naho Yamazaki, has written a blog on the work we’re doing to make research transparency the norm, and how it can help build trust in research.
We're also preparing to celebrate Make it Public Week in the spring, which is the UK’s dedicated week for research transparency. Look out for further updates on X.
Supporting the MESSAGE project
We're supporting a statement of intent calling for the introduction of dedicated policies on sex and gender in research.
The statement was developed by the MESSAGE (Medical Science Sex and Gender Equity) project and is supported by organisations across the UK research community, including the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC).
Blog: The role of the CAG in 2024
Our Confidentiality Advisory Group (CAG) Chair, Tony Calland MBE, has written a blog on the CAG's role in 2024 as we navigate a rapidly developing digital landscape.
The CAG provide expert advice on the use of confidential patient information without consent.
They support the HRA and the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) in making decisions, and play an important role in upholding public trust in research.

Blog: Reflections on public perceptions of research survey
We recently published the results of our survey where the public told us what matters to them in health and social care research.
Our Chief Executive, Matt Westmore, shares his reflections on the results and how they will inform our plans for 2024.

Moving to NIHR Learn
As part of our move to NIHR learn, we’re inviting Research Ethics Committee (REC) and Confidentiality Advisory Group (CAG) members and researchers to join the new e-learning platform so we can better support them.
NIHR Learn is an accessible online learning platform that is already well used in the research community and this collaboration brings together the learning from the HRA and the NIHR into one place.
Subscribe to our new clinical trials bulletin
We’ve launched a regular round-up of the latest news on work we’re doing to help make the UK a great place to do clinical trials.
