Making it easier to do research outside of traditional NHS settings
We are working to make it easy to do research that people can trust. One of the best ways for us to do this is to remove any barriers that may exist for people wanting to do high quality research.
We’ve issued a statement in partnership with NHS Resolution, National Institute of Health Research and the Department of Health and Social Care to provide clarification on the existing arrangements for indemnity cover for NHS staff carrying out research outside of traditional NHS settings in England.
Research partnership joins Shared Commitment
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) North East and North Cumbria has joined the HRA and a host of other organisations to sign up to the Shared Commitment to public involvement in health and social care research.
The Shared Commitment aims to bring about changes which will drive up standards in health and social care research. NIHR ARC North East and North Cumbria is a research partnership that works with communities in the North of England.
There’s still time to join our Confidentiality Advisory Group.
We’re looking for volunteer expert members to join our Confidentiality Advisory Group (CAG). The CAG reviews applications to use identifiable patient data for research purposes and advises the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care on non-research uses.
We need people who have a passion for ensuring health and social care data is used legally, and only in the best public interest. We’d especially like to hear from you if you are a researcher, or have experience in artificial intelligence, managing large datasets or information governance. Applications close on 4 November.
Annual report and accounts 2021/22
We've published our annual report, which outlines who we are, what we did and how we performed in 2021 to 2022.
Did you know that last year we reviewed 4,579 research applications to make sure they were ethical, legal and in the public interest? Or that the work of our 286 staff is supported by almost 1,200 people who give their time generously and in many cases freely to work with us?
Are you ready to #StepForward and do your part in research?
Are you passionate about health and social care research and interested in reviewing applications for research studies? Then we want to hear from you!
We’re looking to recruit volunteer expert members to our Research Ethics Committees. We’re particularly interested in receiving applications from registered healthcare professionals, especially medical doctors or surgeons (currently practicing or retired), dentists, nurses, pharmacists, HCPC registered health and care professionals, social workers and clinical trial statisticians. You’ll gain a wealth of skills which can help your career.
Black History Month – actions not words
Our strategy sets out to ‘make it easy to do research that people can trust’. Trust is fundamental to research: it affects who participates, who listens to the outcomes, and how those outcomes are acted upon.
We know that past experiences of unfair treatment of Black and other often ignored communities have impacted trust. Our Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion Manager Lou Silver, has blogged about what we are doing to rebuild that trust.
