Radiation Assurance reviewer recruitment open |
|
Dear all,
We recently announced that Radiation Assurance will become the way that all research studies involving ionising radiation in the NHS/HSC get their Medical Physics Expert (MPE) and Clinical Radiation Expert (CRE) reviews completed. This is part of our IRAS development work, where we are creating an ionising radiation module that will standardise the approval process and streamline study set-up and management.
In preparation for this change, from 1 November 2021:
- Radiation Assurance will be accepting all studies involving ionising radiation which are taking place in an NHS/HSC setting; and
- the self-managed route will be available for all applicants to use, provided they use HRA-registered reviewers to complete the review. We strongly recommend that you or your employing organisation have a contract in place with applicants before agreeing to self-manage a study. It will be your joint responsibility with the applicant to agree appropriate review timelines and fees for completion of the review.

Help us spread the word
As we are recruiting additional reviewers, we would appreciate it if you could inform colleagues who may not have registered with us yet. The advert on our website includes the role descriptions and details on how to register.
The benefits of becoming an HRA-registered Radiation Assurance reviewer include:
- you will be supporting research taking place in the NHS/HSC
- you will be ensuring that local colleagues receive reviews completed to UK-wide standards, such as standardised dose calculation methods, which will reduce duplication in their local reviews
- you will be undertaking a professional role supporting a UK-wide process contributing to improved healthcare in the UK
- you will receive training on the Radiation Assurance process
- you get a standardised fee of £500 + VAT for new study reviews and £250 + VAT for amendment reviews (England, Northern Ireland and Wales only. Separate arrangements apply for reviewers based in Scotland)
- completed reviews through the process count towards and can be claimed as continuing professional development (CPD).
If there’s anything else you can think of that has benefitted you during this time, we would love to hear from you. Please do contact us at radiation.assurance@hra.nhs.uk to let us know and, of course, add these things to the list when telling your colleagues!
As you are already registered with us there is no further action that you need to take at this time. If you have already informed us that you have specialist knowledge in other clinical areas which we are currently not accepting, you will start to receive requests from us to review these studies when they are submitted to us.
In the meantime if you have any questions or any feedback, please don’t hesitate to contact the technical assurance team at radiation.assurance@hra.nhs.uk.
