Welcome to HRA Latest International Clinical Trials Day special
Every year on 20 May we celebrate International Clinical Trials Day (ICTD) and the contribution of the research participants, researchers, regulators, sponsors and funders who enable lifesaving research to take place.
In a year when the role of clinical trials has never been so vital to our health and wellbeing, there’s even more to celebrate.
In this email we bring together all of our ICTD celebration and comment in one place. This year we're particularly focussing on the vital role of transparency and involvement with patients and the public in clinical trials, and celebrating innovative ways of working

The HRA – a year in clinical trials
We hope you enjoy our short animation that sums up our year in clinical trials in numbers.
Communicating the outcomes of research – planning in advance with patients and the public, Dr Naho Yamazaki
There are many challenges to doing transparent research well, not least being able to find the right resources. The key is early planning that involves patients and the public, trying to find out at the start if, when and how participants want to hear the outcomes of research.
Dr Naho Yamazaki, Head of Policy at the Health Research Authority, writes of the vital role of transparency, and involvement with patients and the public in clinical trials.
Seeing Research - all the way through, Derek Stewart OBE
Involving patients, carers and the public in clinical research is the key to making sure research is successful, accepted and understood by those it is for. But this is nothing without transparency - it is about being able to find out what studies are taking place and what happened as well as being more open and see through.

Combined review
ICTD is a chance to celebrate innovation and new ways of working. Our combined review for clinical trials of medicinal products (or CTIMPs) sees us work with the MHRA, NIHR and the devolved administrations to provide a more streamlined and efficient service offering one application and one decision. It will apply to all CTIMPs from January 2022.
This work is enhancing the UK’s reputation as an attractive option for all trials.

Clinical Trials 2021 campaign
We’re also supporting the Clinical Trials 2021 campaign within the New Scientist and online.
In the supplement our Director of Policy and Partnerships Juliet Tizzard writes about why research transparency is everyone’s business.
'Everyone involved in clinical research has responsibility to ensure it’s open and transparent. Transparency has never been more crucial in research.'

Clinical Trials 2021 campaign
Also as part of the Clinical Trials 2021 campaign within the New Scientist and online, Matt Westmore, Chief Executive of the Health Research Authority, writes about involving patients in the design of clinical trials.
Important, expected, and possible … even in a public health emergency. 'Patients must be involved in the design as well as participation of clinical trials to ensure they are relevant for the people they are created for.'
