Welcome to the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance's Cancer Campaign Resource update for September. We work to help reduce the risk of people developing cancer, and to improve survival outcomes and experiences for those who do go on to develop cancer. This month we are asking for help to promote the following things:

Tick Off Your Cancer Screening

Cervical screening is a test that checks the health of your cervix and can help prevent cervical cancer - also known as a smear test.

It’s offered to women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64.
When your screening invite arrives, don’t let it slip to the bottom of your list. Tick off your cervical screening!

This Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, please share the new Tick Off Your Cervical Screening campaign assets to spread awareness about NHS cervical screening. You can download new A4 posters, A5 leaflets and social media animations and tiles.

Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month

September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month and we have a range of assets for you to promote across your channels.

We’re encouraging partners to help raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian and cervical cancer by sharing our ready-to-use animations.

OUTPatients - Remove the Doubt campaign

The Remove the Doubt campaign tackle myths, misconceptions and barriers to cervical screening within LGBTIQ+ communities.

Organisations can support the campaign by sharing the social media resources and helping raise awareness within LGBTIQ+ communities.

HPV self-testing

The UK National Screening Committee has recommended the NHS implements Human papillomavirus (HPV) self-testing as part of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme. It does not replace the primary cervical screening test.

Invitation to take part in HPV self-testing is initially limited to an eligible group of women and anyone with a cervix aged 30 to 65, who have not attended cervical screening following previous invitations. The service will be gradually rolled out through an initial testing period, after which non-responders to cervical screening will be invited, over the course of up to one year. The service will then move to 'business as usual', as people who have not attended cervical screening following previous invitations become eligible for self-testing.

People who test positive for high-risk HPV, following a self-test, will still need to attend for a clinician taken sample.

Postmenopausal bleeding – New self-referral tool

A new online tool is now available enabling women in Bury, Salford, Oldham and Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale to self-refer for postmenopausal bleeding checks.

Please help publicise this resource across relevant channels to support earlier access and awareness.

If in Doubt, Check it Out

We will be re-running our “If in Doubt, Check it Out” campaign over the coming months. The campaign, featuring GPs and other primary care staff from across Greater Manchester, seeks to highlight the importance of early diagnosis, which can make a crucial difference in how treatable cancer is.

Many people delay seeking medical help due to fear, uncertainty, or not wanting to “bother” their doctor—but this campaign wants to change that mindset. Others worry that it will be too hard to get a GP appointment – another myth the campaign seeks to debunk.

Tailored packs are available for each locality of Greater Manchester, featuring GPs and other primary care staff from that area. If your locality is not available yet, it will be coming soon – and in the meantime please feel free to use any of the other packs.

The Get Cancer Clever roadshow continues

Celebrity chef Ainsley Harriet stopped by to visit the #GetCancerClever roadshow team while we were at Morrisons Bredbury for a chat and a picture with the van!

The This Van Can roadshow will be visiting parts of Salford and sporting events throughout September.

Please help promote local dates and activity across all areas, ensuring the Get Cancer Clever messaging is included in all communications.

Stockport - Self Request Chest X-ray

STOCKPORT! Self request chest x-ray is now available at Stepping Hill Hospital for people who are registered with a Stockport GP, over 40 and have one or more symptoms including a cough for three weeks or more, shortness of breath, fatigue and weight loss. Help us promote this service to Stockport residents using this pack, which includes social media tiles, video, copy for social media, newsletters and whatsapp messages.

Update for professionals

National Cancer Patient Experience Survey (CPES) highlights positive experiences in Greater Manchester

The latest NHS England National Cancer Patient Experience Survey highlights positive experiences of cancer care across Greater Manchester.

This year, Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance recorded no scores below the expected range, with 10 areas performing above expectations nationally. Patients also gave their overall care an average rating of 9 out of 10.

The survey highlights particular strengths in compassionate care, support at diagnosis, confidence in cancer teams and treating patients with respect and dignity.

Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and to colleagues across Greater Manchester who continue to deliver outstanding cancer care every day.

Patient feedback helps us understand what's working well and where we can continue to improve services for people affected by cancer.

Bee Seen, Get Screened - Answer Cancer

Help make cancer screening more accessible by supporting the Bee Seen, Get Screened pledge. The pledge encourages employers across Greater Manchester to offer paid time off or flexible working for NHS cancer screening appointments, helping reduce barriers to early diagnosis.
