Cancer Campaign Resource Update
December 2025
Hello,
This December we are continuing our This Van Can cancer awareness roadshow highlighting how people can 'get cancer clever' by recognising key potential symptoms of cancer. We will be visiting Rochdale, Stockport and Trafford before Christmas, and the van will then continue its tour of Greater Manchester until April 2026. Please help us to raise awareness of the roadshow if it is in your area or about the wider 'Get Cancer Clever' messaging.
There are no cancer awareness months in December but we will be reminding people about a new Talking Therapies service for cancer patients and their carers and reminding people not to ignore persistent heartburn - something people often put down to festive overindulgence!
There's also an update for professionals about our new metastatic cancer strategy.

This Van Can .. help you get "Cancer Clever" |
The latest “This Van Can” is continuing its tour of Greater Manchester. This time it’s focusing on the generic signs and symptoms of cancer / red flags, as well as busting some cancer myths. It’s accompanied by a sister campaign “Get Cancer Clever” which uses the same messaging. We want as many residents of Greater Manchester as possible to know what to look out for, with the ambition that more cancers are diagnosed at an early stage.
The van will be visiting Rochdale, Stockport and Trafford before Christmas before continuing its tour until April 2026.
You can check the upcoming dates on www.thisvancan.co.uk

Our new campaign “Get Cancer Clever” is now available to share. The campaign focuses on the generic, red flag symptoms that could be signs of cancer, as well as tackling some common cancer myths.
The social media pack contains tiles in standard and reels sizes. We have also produced animated versions of each in both sizes, which work well on reels. The square animation works particularly well on Facebook.
A4 Posters are also available to support the campaign – please contact gmcancer.comms@nhs.net with your address if you would like some sending to you.

Use our new toolkit from now until February to remind people to check for skin cancer even in winter. It includes details about how to check your skin. There’s also tips on how to stay safe while on ski holidays and a reminder about why sun beds are harmful.

Oesophageal cancer awareness |
Help us to raise awareness of oesophageal cancer (also known as gullet cancer) symptoms this in the run up to the festive period. We have a range of brightly coloured social media tiles to download highlighting symptoms of oesophageal cancer:
- heartburn and indigestion lasting 3 weeks or more – especially if you are over 55
- difficulty swallowing – for any age
- reminders that persistent heartburn is not normal from the recent heartburn roadshow campaign.

Greater Manchester Metastatic Cancer Strategy |
We launched our Greater Manchester Metastatic Cancer Strategy last week at an event in central Manchester. It was a great event attended by colleagues from across Greater Manchester, charities, patients and our Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.
It provided the perfect opportunity to raise awareness of metastatic cancer and what we are doing to improve the care given to those living with metastatic disease.
Patients were central to the launch with short films showing the real experiences of people from across the region highlighting the need for our strategy.
Now that we’ve launched the metastatic strategy, we must deliver on our commitment to everyone in Greater Manchester living with incurable cancer.
Thank you for your engagement so far and please do engage with our social media content by liking and sharing so we can spread our message far and wide.
