Dear Colleagues,

October covers a number campaigns which we'd love you to help us to shout about. We have an exciting new Heartburn Health Roadshow visiting 10 areas across Greater Manchester which is a great chance to publicise both the roadshow and share messages about oesophageal cancer symptoms. It's also Breast Cancer Awareness Month - our Look and Feel Every Month campaign is being publicised in community centres and mainstream media. Join in and share our new content - featuring real women and well-known Greater Manchester locations on your TV screens, social media or by putting up a poster. October is also Stoptober so there's advice on how to stop smoking plus details of a new talking therapy service for cancer patients and carers. Lastly, lung cancer screening will be arriving in more parts of Greater Manchester.

Heartburn Health Roadshow

Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance has teamed up with Heartburn Cancer UK to bring a new Heartburn Health Roadshow to the streets of Greater Manchester for 10 days in October 2025 between Monday 6 and Friday 17 October. The Heartburn ‘Hub’ will be based at various supermarket locations between 10:30am and 6pm Monday to Friday with members of Heartburn Cancer UK offering advice about persistent heartburn, indigestion or reflux and the need to get this checked out with a GP. They’ll also be giving out information leaflets. Please share social media messages about the roadshow coming to Greater Manchester or your area of Greater Manchester or newsletter copy inserting your nearest venue.

Campaign - Look and Feel Every Month

We're launching a new breast cancer awareness campaign encouraging people to “look and feel” every month.

Featuring women from Greater Manchester, it encourages people to be vigilant, check regularly and report any potential signs of breast cancer to their GP.

It particularly focuses on women just below breast cancer screening age (40-50) and those just above screening aged (71+) as well as Black and South Asian women.

We also have new videos to encourage Black and South Asian women to get breast cancer symptoms checked out. Produced by The University of Manchester, the Caribbean and African Health Network and Fatima Women's Association the videos are available on YouTube to share.

This Van Can

A bright green NHS Greater Manchester Cancer Action van with impactful messages about cancer awareness and early detection

“This Van Can” is coming back! Our cancer awareness roadshow will be back on the road from the end of October, visiting all ten boroughs of Greater Manchester and delivering over 70 events over the next few months. This time it will be focusing on generic red flag symptoms rather than one specific type of cancer, encouraging the people of Greater Manchester to “Get Cancer Clever”. Specially trained staff will be available for friendly chats, advice, and information. Visitors can stop by for a quick conversation or pick up free materials to take home.

As well as the van, the “Get Cancer Clever” campaign will be sharing key signs and symptoms of cancer using social and traditional media. It also hopes to debunk some of the myths around cancer that might create barriers to seeking help.

You need to know - ovarian and womb cancer

You Need to Know is a campaign to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer and womb cancer.
The Alliance has teamed up with the Eve Appeal to produce:

A4 posters to download and print to raise awareness of ovarian and womb cancer
social media tiles
leaflets about ovarian cancer

The resources will help people recognise possible symptoms and explain the importance of getting checked by a doctor. These symptoms may be nothing serious, but it is always best to speak to a doctor. The campaign urges everyone to: Tell your doctor. Get it checked because You Need to Know.

Stoptober

To support Stoptober, the Department of Health and Social Care are sharing a range of quit smoking materials. They are available to order or download from the DHSC Campaign Resource Centre

If you work for a public sector organisation or service provider and you’d like to edit any of the Stoptober resources, please email partnerships@dhsc.gov.uk with a brief description about how you plan to use them and they may be able to share the Canva links.

The link above includes three new printed A3 Stoptober posters which are now available to order, ideal for use in displays and outreach activities. These posters are free to order and available on a first-come, first-served basis. You can order up to two copies of each design. Each poster features a QR code that when scanned, takes the user directly to the NHS Better Health quit smoking website.

Campaign - Think well with cancer

Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance has worked with Greater Manchester Mental Health (GMMH) Talking Therapies Service to create a dedicated pathway which can help support people who have been affected by cancer. It means people affected by cancer can now refer themselves into NHS Talking Therapies. The service is free, confidential, and available to anyone registered with a GP in Manchester, Bolton, Salford, Trafford and Wigan.

It offers support and psychological therapies to people who may be experiencing psychological difficulties linked to their experience of cancer. This includes support for people who have had a diagnosis themselves and for their close relatives and loved ones.

We are now welcoming both professional and self-referrals into the service! Please help publicise the service.

Campaign - Lung Cancer Screening

Lung Cancer Screening in Westhoughton, The Heatons and Bury

Mobile health screening unit labelled "Targeted Lung Health Check Programme" by NHS Greater Manchester, parked in an empty lot under a cloudy sky.

Lung Cancer Screening continues to be rolled out to eligible people (current and former cigarette and shisha smokers aged 55 to 74) across Greater Manchester.

In October the mobile clinics will be serving patients in Radcliffe, Bury, Westhoughton and The Heatons, Stockport.
