One of our key areas of focus for our social impact programme is volunteering. We enable volunteering through Timebank. Timebank is a PPP led social impact initiative, which uses the credits of ‘time’ rather than money for the purpose of investment, supporting initiatives aligned to the Social Impact Multiplied programme.
PPP will invest the hours like cash but instead of allocating money, we would invest skills and time. This is a simple ‘plug and play’ initiative for all PPP companies.
If your business can get involved in supporting Timebank, then reach out to me or the team.
Luke Richardson, Head of Social Impact (PPP)

The PPP at Sellafield social impact programme also supports local charities that require skills and knowledge to help them unlock new sources of funding. The BidBase, a bid management consultancy and part of the PPP supply chain, has supported Cumbrian children’s charity, Team Evie, over the last year, looking at ways to develop its charity strategy and helping it source funding opportunities.
With the support of volunteers at The BidBase, Team Evie was able to secure funding from the National Lottery for its new Peer Support Service programme. The Peer Support Service connects parents and families with someone who has had similar experiences with their child, so that they have someone to speak to who understands, cares and provides support. The service will be delivered by volunteer peer supporters, trained and supported by Team Evie.
Team Evie is a charity set up in the name of Evie Johnston, who sadly passed away in 2015 at only six months old. Team Evie's mission is to help sick children and families who face similar challenges to those Evie faced in her all too short life.
Team Evie is able to continuously support 15 different wards and medical teams across the North East and Cumbria. So far, it has raised over £500,000, which has helped buy physiotherapy equipment, sensory equipment and electronics for patients and staff training.
Greg Johnston, Team Evie CEO, said:
“We are so grateful to Mark Watters and Colin Sharpe from The BidBase for their incredible support in guiding us through the application process and giving us constructive feedback throughout! It is often hard to sell the work you do as a charity, when you are so close to it and understand it so well. The help of the team at The BidBase to focus our attention on clearly outlining the fantastic work we will do with the new service was key in helping us secure the vital funding.”
Luke Richardson, PPP’s Head of Social Impact, said:
“Timebank has a range of skills from across PPP. This is a great example of skill-based volunteering which has and will enable a big impact. I’d like to say a big well done to Greg, Mark and Colin for their professionalism – they’ve come together and made an amazing thing happen. The impact will be felt for years to come”.

Staff from Key Delivery Partner, Severfield Nuclear & Infrastructure, have supported the development of the GoodLives community garden, which is situated at Westlakes Science Park. Nik Pearson, Simon Ellis and operatives from their on-site subcontractor, ES-Steel, dedicated 275 hours from Timebank to construct two commercial poly tunnels on the site, which will allow for seedlings or other plants to be grown outdoors.
The GoodLives project is led by Home to Work, a charity based in Cleator Moor. The project aims to offer life and employment skills through gardening, horticulture, training and education, with additional mental health and general wellbeing benefits. The target audience for GoodLives is learners from disadvantaged backgrounds or communities, or those individuals who may have disengaged from society.
Learner courses are bespoke to the individual depending on their needs, and GoodLives aims to support 80-100 learners a year for an average period of five months.
Karen Jones, Managing Director of Home to Work, said:
“We are over the moon that a company like Severfield helped us move this project forward. Even more so they were able to do it in their spare time. We cannot thank them enough for all their effort and high standard of work - thank you!”
Throughout the project, GoodLives has received substantial support from the supply chain, enabling it to secure water and electricity connections for the community garden site by the end of August.
Luke Richardson, PPP’s Head of Social Impact, said:
“Goodlives is a fantastic community project. Its core goals to support skills aligns perfectly with the the PPP social impact strategy. The team at Severfield have made a huge difference – well done Severfield!”

At Programme and Project Partners (PPP) and Sellafield Ltd, we have continued to focus on ways we can use aspiration to inspire young people in Cumbria to help them make informed career choices. Morgan Sindall, through PPP, partnered with Inspira to deliver the Supply Chain Workshop programme to St Joseph’s Catholic High School.
The Inspira programme looks to bridge the gap between education and employment and operates in schools, special schools, colleges, and alternative education provision, ensuring no young person is left behind in accessing comprehensive careers support.
Embracing the theme, Morgan Sindall invited five companies from its own supply chain to support it with the delivery of the Supply Chain Workshops. The aim of the workshops is to introduce pupils aged 11-14 to how Sellafield, and the nuclear industry more widely, works in close partnership with a diverse range of employers to achieve their objectives. The sessions provide young people with a valuable opportunity to interact with employers, gain insights into the workplace and explore potential career pathways.
John Steele, MD from Adept Management, said:
“Having been introduced to the Inspira programme by one of our key clients, Morgan Sindall, we have supported several of these sessions now. They are always well designed and organised, resulting in the children listening and engaging throughout. It is also good to see them working together in small groups and engaging us when they want support or to understand more about different careers / occupations and what they involve. I have already reached out to our wider suppliers, partners and associates to encourage them to support this fantastic programme alongside us.”
The pupils thoroughly enjoyed this informative, engaging, and interactive workshop, and one pupil commented that they ‘liked finding out how a supply chain worked and the companies that were involved.’
The workshops helped students understand how the local labour market is transforming with opportunities becoming available in the supply chain, not just for those with an interest in STEM but for those with interests in other disciplines such as marketing, human resources, and psychology. The programme gave the pupils the awareness about career opportunities, and an understanding of the skills and knowledge required to fulfil the roles.
Volunteer Gemma Harrison, from Morgan Sindall, said:
“I think it’s a great workshop that gives pupils a bit of time to learn about supply chains and start thinking about all the different jobs that are out there in general. Having a supplier along definitely adds value to the sessions.”
