Safety Pause this Thursday
Everyone across PPP and the wider Sellafield site will be observing a safety pause this Thursday.
Projects will also be carrying out safety pause activities throughout this week.
This year the focus will be on safety observations and how we all have a part to play in keeping each other safe.
At 10am on Thursday 20 April, PPP Services and the Client Team will use the opportunity:
- To reflect on our Zero Harm commitments
- To always consider the Golden Rules
- To act on SAFER protocol
- To increase and boost observations
- To improve our Safety Energy
Locations
Duncan Elliott and Mark Hopkins will lead the safety pause at Banna Court.
Chris Miles and Peter Hogg will lead the safety pause at Hinton House.
Calendar invitations have been issued and everyone is encouraged to take part.

Stress awareness month: Don't let stress control your life
April is stress awareness month, which provides us with a time to focus on the benefits and harmful effects of stress and ways to manage it. Stress can impact our physical and mental health, relationships, work, and overall decrease quality of life therefore it is important to reflect on our own mental health and the wellbeing of others and learn stress-management techniques.
Here are some tips to help you manage stress:
- Take regular breaks to reduce stress.
- Practice relaxation techniques: Deep breathing, meditation, yoga, etc.
- Stay connected: Reach out to friends and family for support.
- Exercise regularly: Exercise is a great way to reduce stress and improve overall health. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day.
- Get enough sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
Remember, managing stress is a lifelong process, and what works for one person may not work for another.

Cladding begins at SCP’s Service building
Since the successful installation of the two charge vessels at the SIXEP Continuity Plant (SCP) in mid-March, things have been progressing on the Service building, with the start of cladding.
This works towards the next major milestone PWO2 ‘Service Building Weathertight’ which is due to complete November 2023.
Whilst the cladding takes place, the recently installed vessels are now re-wrapped and protected from the elements. The first set of tanks installed in December are due to be cleaned and re-wrapped imminently. Due to their size and being delivered horizontally, the tanks had to be spun and lifted into place. Due to the lifting saddles being encased by the wrapping, this impeded the turn and lift - hence the removal of the original protective wrapping.
Team PPP Talks date confirmed
Join Duncan Elliott and other members of the PPP team for this programme update on the year ahead. Invites have now been issued for the virtual session on Monday 22 May, 10.30am to 12pm.
The call is an opportunity for everyone from across PPP to tune in and hear more about the new PPP strategy as well as updates since we last came together in October.
We look forward to seeing you there. This session will be recorded for the benefit of those who can't make it, although if you’re working on this day please do make every effort to attend.
SCP on canvas
There can’t be many, if any, paintings of facilities at Sellafield, but our supply chain management lead Peter Ritson has captured SCP perfectly in his first-ever industrial painting.
Peter is well known to PPP colleagues and those around Hinton House for his love of painting, a hobby he took up around the time of the pandemic, and has even been asked to produce portraits of family pets and local landscapes.
Peter said:
“When I saw the photo of SCP on LinkedIn there was something about it that just shouted paint me!
“Having never painted a construction site before I knew it would be a challenge. It raised many questions in my mind - how do you balance effect with detail? How do you represent the straight lines of construction? How do you represent complexity of structure and temporary works? And overall could I do it justice? So, five weekends later I’d painted the scene.”
We think it’s brilliant and hope to see it displayed in Hinton House soon.
RAP team members greening up West Lakes
Members of the Replacement Analytical Project (RAP) team recently took an hour out to volunteer their time on West Lakes Science Park, where PPP’s Banna Court office base in Cumbria is situated.
Senior Project Manager Matt Barnett says:
“We spent about an hour planting trees to form a future hedgerow around Fleswick Pond on the West Lakes Science Park. It was a good opportunity to take a little time out of the project and add some value to the local environment.”
With the help of volunteers over 2,500 trees were planted in late 2021 as part of The Queens Green Canopy – a national initiative to plant trees across the nation.
Following the success of that project and with the help of Cumbria’s Coastal Community Forest funding, BEC (the company that runs the Science Park) is continuing the planting with the further 3,250 trees in March and April.
