In this edition of the newsletter, we are sharing three case studies which provide a broad range of examples of the impacts we are aiming to create through our strategy. The first, is an example from Altrad and William King Construction detailing the successful contract win for a local small business. The second is from EJ Parkers demonstrating an example of skills-based volunteering to support our local charities. The third is an example from Kier showcasing a partnership to leave a legacy and develop early talent by working with the local college.
These examples cover three of five of our strategy themes - localisation, opportunity, and the volunteering.
As always, if you are interested in supporting social impact, please reach out.

Cumbrian SME celebrates growth after Sellafield win
A small Cumbrian business is building its experience, growth and reputation in nuclear construction with the Programme and Project Partners at Sellafield.
William King Construction, with its foundations the housing and building trade, has diversified its products and services to support high hazard reduction in the nuclear industry. It is a shining example of how SMEs can adapt and fine-tune their offering for a new sector.
The family run construction company, founded in Cleator Moor, has recently won its third major contract working on key decommissioning projects at Sellafield site.
This latest work package of work secured by William King on the SIXEP Continuity Plant (SCP) project (masonry and internal fire door fit-out package) is worth approximately £2.6 million and a major boost for the local business and economy.
Will King, Founder and MD of William Kind Construction Ltd, said:
“For a local SME like ourselves it is an absolute privilege to now be awarded work on these prestigious construction projects on such a complex nuclear site. Our business has continued to develop, going from strength to strength in all areas."
PPP Head of Social Impact Luke Richardson said:
“Supporting local SME’s is a key part of the Programme and Project Partners (PPP) strategy. It’s great to see yet another example of a local business working as part PPP. The team at William King Construction offer a great apprenticeship scheme and have been big champions of Calderwood House working with residents of the hostel to secure employment. This is great for the local economy, particularly employment in the region.”
Health and Safety training offers opportunities for local charities and not-for-profits
As part of Social Impact delivery, EJ Parker Technical Services has been providing “An Introduction to Health & Safety in the Workplace” training.
EJ Parker, which is a Key Delivery Partner (KDP) on the PPP HVAC framework, has been working in partnership with Gordon Henry, from Bedrock Basics, to provide the training for local charities and not-for-profit organisations.
As all employers and businesses have legal duties and responsibilities to ensure that their workplace is a safe and healthy environment for all staff, unpaid staff/volunteers and members of the public who enter this workspace for any reason (such as people who use services, clients and customers). This legal duty applies to all charities and social enterprises regardless of size.
Bedrock is a key strand of the Transforming West Cumbria programme, which focuses on building the resilience, capabilities and financial stability of Third Sector organisations in West Cumbria. TWC is funded through Sellafield Ltd's social impact multiplied SIX programme.
PPP Head of Social Impact Luke Richardson said:
"This is a really great example of skills-based volunteering. I’m really pleased to see EJ Parkers continued participation in our social impact programme. I’d also like to send a personal thank you to Callum, Anne Marie and Gordon for their efforts to develop the training, make it available to 11 organisations and deliver it. I’d extend that thank you to EJ Parkers team across PPP. I look forward to seeing the training programme continue and welcome other companies bringing new modules to the programme."
Kier partners with Lakes College to support next generation of apprentices
The Kier team working on our Sellafield Product and Residue Store Retreatment Plant (SRP) project have teamed up with Lakes College, in Workington, to set up a construction skills school of excellence.
As part of Kier’s commitment to social impact, team members Richie Philips, Michael Jones, John Buckley and Craig Shotton, who are highly skilled tradesmen, have undertaken training to become NVQ assessors. They have already begun to pass on the skills they have developed during their time in the industry by training the next generation.
Kier NVQ co-ordinator, Craig Harvie, who has worked closely with the college to set up the scheme says:
“It has been a pleasure working with the staff at Lakes College who are clearly very motivated to improve the training opportunities in the area. It has also been rewarding to see how our NVQ assessors have embraced returning to higher education some 30 years after leaving school and are learning new skills and improving their computer skills.”
PPP Head of Social Impact Luke Richardson said:
“I’m really pleased to see what the teams at Kier and Lakes College have managed to achieve. The investment in our next generation is key and it’s really great to see how the teams are addressing some of the skills gaps in our industry whilst providing opportunities for people in our local communities. This is a fantastic example of how supply chain can leave a lasting legacy”.
