RAP achieves PPP first with 100% Safety Energy score
The Replacement Analytical Project (RAP) team has achieved a 100 per cent Safety Energy score in the first month of 2023. This is a landmark milestone for our on-site construction projects since implementing the new measures.
Safety Energy is the PPP headline Health and Safety metric. It measures the amount of initiative that our leadership, supervisors and operatives exhibit to promote and communicate safe work practices. A positive Safety Energy score can help reduce the amount of harm caused to our people within the workplace.
Jack Tomlinson, PPP EHS Improvement Manager, said:
“I feel privileged to report a Safety Energy score of 100 per cent for RAP, which is a first on PPP since implementing the new measures. A significant highlight is the complete turnaround on observation numbers, and most of these have been reported via the observation QR code.
"RAP personnel are recording all their leadership activities centrally and consistently, proving the practical issues we face from multiple systems can be overcome. I believe that a leading safety energy score will directly reduce our reportable incidents, and this is an excellent response from RAP.”

'Exceptional' team helps deliver Green IPA result for SCP
We are pleased to announce that the Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) has rated the SIXEP Continuity Plant (SCP) project a ‘green’ from the recent project assurance review, along with 6 areas of best practice.
This included Commercial Strategy, 4d BIM Planning, Project and Programme Management and Risk and Opportunity Management - a ‘rare’ achievement.
It was noted that the Programme and Project Partners (PPP) model was proving to be highly effective, giving the government confidence in our project performance. The IPA have seen the delivery model at Sellafield already make a positive impact to the way major projects are being delivered. They want to see how the approach will continually improve, along with lessons that can help new nuclear infrastructure projects across the industry.
SCP is on track to reach their second major project wide milestone, in making the service building weathertight.
The IPA’s review team commented:
“The project is well run by a highly competent and experienced project team from executive level to on-the-ground delivery management. The awareness of project status and emerging issues, and the agility to address these issues in a timely fashion, demonstrated by the project team is exceptional, as is Health and Safety awareness and performance.”

PPP and Sellafield Ltd Reading Programme launches across Cumbria in collaboration with Chapter One
PPP and Sellafield Ltd are delighted to launch their Reading Programme in a number of primary schools across Cumbria.
The initiative has attracted an impressive 111 corporate volunteers from the PPP Lot partners and the following from our Supply Chain: NWEC Alliance (a joint venture between McMennon and TIS Cumbria Ltd), Jacobs, BBK, Cavendish Nuclear, MITIE, Orano, Kier, Metalcraft, Seddons and the Box Encapsulation Plant (BEP) project (jv comprising Jacobs, and Balfour Beatty).
Each of the 111 corporate volunteer readers ‘meet’ virtually with the same child for 30 minutes a week, during the school day, over an entire academic year.
The adult-child pair read stories and play games that build fluency, comprehension and, most importantly, foster reading confidence and enjoyment.
This is all achieved through the digital platform that does a lot of the work for you.
One in three UK children from disadvantaged backgrounds leave primary school unable to read properly which can affect their whole life. The PPP/Chapter One Reading Programme is fully aligned to the Sellafield Ltd SiX programme, as it supports the strategic objective of enabling thriving communities, by improving the reading skills of children throughout West Cumbria

Zero Harm day is a day of recognition and reflection when we focus on past performance, recognise and celebrate our successes and take the lessons learnt into future planning to avoid adverse events .
This year's theme is Plan, Organise, Direct and Control.
Everyone has a part to play in the planning, organisation, direction and control of work activities to ensure we protect the health, safety and wellbeing of ourselves and our colleagues.
In recognition of Zero Harm Day on February 16th, during the week commencing February 13th, our projects will be undertaking activities linked to the theme.

 Completion of our Inclusion survey
Thank you to all who took the chance to complete our Inclusion survey over the last few weeks. The survey will track our progress on how inclusive we are as a partnership. Closing last Friday, 10 February, we saw fantastic engagement from across the partnership.
What are the next steps?
We're expecting the data from the survey to be reviewed independently by the National Centre for Diversity (NCD) and ready to review by Wednesday, 1 March. The survey feedback and focus group input will be compiled into a report. Our People Forum will examine this report to plan and coordinate activities to support a more inclusive environment. Once we have something to share, we will communicate this when we can do so.
Have you completed the FREDIE eLearning yet?
While we're waiting on where we are on this journey, we still have some opportunities for you to work on your knowledge of FREDIE practices that support making PPP a place for all to thrive. Learning outcomes include;
- Knowledge of the Equality Act 2010,
- What is meant by FREDIE practices - fairness, respect, equality, diversity, inclusion and engagement,
- How FREDIE practices create an effective workplace and,
- The Dos and Don'ts of workplace inclusion.
The training is accessible on any device. You can do so here to complete the training, which takes under an hour to complete.
If you have any questions about our inclusion activities, email Claire.Gribben@sl-ppp.co.uk to find out more.
