In this edition of our impact newsletter, we are drawing attention to our upcoming reading programme which will kickstart in January 2023. Supported by NWEC Alliance (McMennon and TIS Cumbria), Cavendish Nuclear, Mitie, Jacobs, Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick, Orano, Kier, Metalcraft and Sellafield Ltd. The programme will train and deploy 100 volunteers to work with 100 children to support reading in our local primary schools. This is again another great example of collaboration across the Programme and Project Partners (PPP).
If you need or want support in getting involved in our social impact programme, please do reach out to us – social.impact@sl-ppp.co.uk.

Introducing our Reading Programme
Programme and Project Partners (PPP) and Sellafield Ltd are excited to be working with the charity Innovations for Learning (IfL), and not-for-profit Primary Business Partnership (PBP)*, to introduce TutorMate into schools across West Cumbria. This promising project uses an online platform to pair corporate volunteers with young children in West Cumbrian schools who need vital reading practice.
PPP and Sellafield Ltd are delighted to be working with the following partners to deliver this initiative:
- NWEC Alliance
- Jacobs
- Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick
- Cavendish Nuclear
- MITIE
- Orano
- Kier
- Metalcraft
Even before the Covid-19 pandemic closed our schools, a shocking 36% of 11-year-olds from disadvantaged backgrounds in England left primary school unable to read English well, leaving them a full nine months behind their peers. Therefore, the PPP AND Sellafield Ltd Social Impact Teams are working with the PBP to understand which schools are most in need and whose students would most benefit from this exciting scheme.
Each volunteer reader ‘meets’ virtually with the same child for just 30 minutes a week, during the school day, over an entire academic year. The adult-child pair read stories and play games that build fluency, comprehension and, most importantly, foster reading confidence and enjoyment. This is all via a digital platform that does a lot of the work for you!
Whether using your corporate volunteer hours/days or are directly assisting to deliver PPP Timebank commitments, IfL’s online TutorMate programme is:
-
Time-efficient – only 30 minutes a week;
- Flexible - volunteer from anywhere with a laptop and internet connection;
-
Simple – the online platform guides volunteers through each session;
-
Rewarding – you can make a transformative difference to a child’s’ life!
I’d really like to get involved, what should I do next?
More information on volunteering with TutorMate can be found here:
If you have any further questions or would like to help a child to read better as a TutorMate volunteer, please feel free to contact Mark Cant mark.cant@sl-ppp.co.uk
Spotlighting PPP Interns - Kieron Kirkbride
The internship scheme is a real collaborative effort between our PPP Lots partners alongside Inspira, Cumbria Youth Alliance and Job Centre Plus who help connect us with young people who are looking for opportunities. Our intention is to continue to grow our intake of interns and create pathways for them to continue their early career development, ultimately setting them up with rewarding careers where they will flourish.
Kieron has worked within the PPP communications and engagement team for the past 7 months. This placement has taught Kieron the importance of effective networking, through presenting Safety Shares to the PPP Senior Leadership team, as well as the planning and hosting of multiple employee wide Share & Learn calls.
Kieron Kirkbride commented:
“I am hoping by the end of the internship to find myself taking on an apprenticeship and carrying on in PPP with high aspirations to succeed and look towards progressing through the organisation…The PPP internship is the most rewarding and career defining opportunity I have had in my life, the team are excellent, and I look forward to embedding myself further in the communications team and working across PPP projects.”
We look forward to seeing Kieron grow over the course of the internship, by taking on more responsibilities and managing multiple channels, both internally and externally.
