Safety Hub Golden Rules: Be fit for work
PPP prides itself on putting safety first and empowers its workforce to stop any unsafe acts prior to an incident occurring.
The Health Safety and Wellbeing Hub have together agreed a set of 'golden rules' that are being implemented across all PPP projects on the Sellafield site.
The first golden rule is to ensure that each of us is fit to work, remembering our commitment to zero harm 24/7.
We must believe that true improvement can only be achieved by working together as one team and learning from our experiences.
So what does fit for work mean to you?
- I am responsible for ensuring I am fit for duty, and seeking help or advice when I am unsure.
- I will not carry out any work whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs, this can include over-the-counter medication.
- I must inform my supervisor if I am taking any medication that can affect my performance.
- I acknowledge the effects wellbeing can have on fitness to work.
- I will complete my health questionnaires honestly and highlight any existing health concerns I might have.
John Leslie, Head of SRP project, said:
“It is important that everyone is fit for work. We need to observe people and engage with each other, we don’t all know what’s going on with people, are they strong enough and mentally fit enough to be in work. We are here to look after our people.”
This financial year, 97% of days achieved Zero Harm, however within this period we have also had significant near misses. The most recent safety pause focused on situational awareness; the first of the four golden rules requires us to be fit for work and not following this can significantly impair our situational awareness and result in an incident.
  Aquila mockup trials for RAP
In July, the RAP Analytical Engineering Design (AED) team undertook mock-up trials on a number of their instruments at supplier Aquila’s facility in Winchester.
RAP's AED team is using the collaborative model offered by the PPP framework to deliver the design, prototyping and testing of instruments in a shorter time period.
The instruments being tested were ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer) and the MC-ICP-MS (multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer).
The trials were designed to verify that the nuclearized versions of the ICP-OES and MC-ICP-MS instruments could be operated and maintained in containment. It was recorded that the trials were a success with no major issues identified, but several optimisations have been noted that will in time make life a lot easier for the operators of the instruments.
The AED team along with Aquila will be attending next month’s Hot Labs event in Manchester to present how they are collaborating together. Find out more.

Project delivery at Sellafield shines at NDA supply chain event
The end of July was highlighted by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority's supply chain event, held for the first time after more than two years following pandemic restrictions.
PPP and Sellafield's Project Delivery Directorate hosted the Project Zone at the event, which took place at the International Centre in Telford.
The PPP team were joined by Sellafield Projects Director Andy Sharples and some of our supply chain partners, who shared project news, their experiences of working with PPP at Sellafield, highlighting future opportunities for guests.
The NDA welcomed more than 300 exhibitors and 1,700 delegates to the event.
Head of PPP Duncan Elliott commented:
“There was some great engagement going on with our supply chain partners and wider supply chain. The event had a huge turnout and there are exciting opportunities for this partnership at Sellafield moving forward.”

New contract will support Sellafield facility for decades to come
PPP is delighted to announce Ansaldo Nuclear has been awarded the first contract as part of the goods and services agreement (GSA) framework.
Ansaldo Nuclear will develop key tie-in connections between the existing SIXEP facility and PPP's new build SIXEP Continuity Plant.
The connections will play a key role in ensuring SIXEP can continue its vital work for decades to come, supporting Sellafield’s purpose to create a clean and safe environment for future generations.
PPP's Head of Supply Chain Peter Hogg said:
"This framework has been established to enable our projects to make quicker contract awards by removing some elements of a typical procurement exercise.
This award proves that the model works, and I look forward to the projects placing more contracts in the near future."
