NPS sets out the need for geological disposal infrastructure

The National Policy Statement (NPS) for geological disposal infrastructure was this month laid before Parliament. This is an important step on the journey to deliver a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) in the UK, which is designed to provide a safe, secure, and permanent disposal solution for our radioactive waste.

The NPS explains the national need for geological disposal infrastructure, provides planning guidance for developers and outlines the process for the assessment of development consent applications in England. Wales and Scotland have their own devolved policies and there is currently no siting policy for Northern Ireland.

Radioactive Waste Management is engaging with stakeholders, interested parties and communities to find a suitable site for a GDF – only where the local community is willing to host the facility.

Community leaders learn about GDF 

Delegates at the recent Local Government Association Conference took a trip into the future, 1km underground, to explore a state of the art Geological Disposal Facility (GDF).

With RWM’s experts on hand, community leaders were able to explore the role geology plays in site selection and learn more about a GDF.

Dr Samantha King triumphs at the ENEI Awards

RWM’s Samantha King, Head of Requirements and Programme, has been recognised as an equality and inclusion Senior Champion of the Year at the Employers Network for Equality & Inclusion (ENEI) 2019 awards.

Dr King was credited for playing a key role in driving forward RWM’s focus and strategy on enhancing equality, diversity, and inclusion, through structured surveys, engagement, and tailored action plans.

International view brings GDF to life

RWM was delighted to be involved in the recent Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) Stakeholder Summit in Anglesey. The summit is a key event in the NDA calendar providing an opportunity to communicate NDA’s critical mission to a broad range of national and local stakeholders.

Keynote speaker, Marie Berggren (Head of unit, final repositories for radioactive waste), brought to life the site selection process and experiences from the municipality of Östhammar, the host community for the GDF in Sweden.
