Nottingham is awarded over £18m for warmer council homes 🏠

Nottingham Council House

Nottingham City Council has announced that it has been awarded £18.202 million of government funding to deliver warmer, more energy-efficient homes, reduce carbon emissions and fuel bills, tackle fuel poverty, and support green jobs🔧

The funding, allocated by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero under the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF) Wave 3 scheme, covers the period to the end of March 2028 and is part of a consortium bid of £151 million awarded to the Midlands Net Zero Hub (MNZH).

The Wave 3 funding will drive retrofit measures to improve building fabric, decarbonise heating systems and see more renewable energy installed in almost 2,500 council homes across the city.

Councillor Jay Hayes, Executive Member for Housing and Planning, said, “This funding improves the quality of council housing in the city and reduces energy bills for our tenants.

“All of this directly supports our Council Plan and Nottingham’s ambition to become carbon neutral city.”

Get involved with Second Hand September 👚

Second Hand September

Oxfam's Second Hand September, where people challenge themselves to only shop second hand for 30 days to help people and planet is back for 2025 👗

The fashion industry and our relationship with clothing is a major contributor to the climate crisis. Some key facts:

👕Each year, up to 40% of all clothing manufactured globally is never sold.

🥻By 2050, the amount of unworn clothes globally could almost stretch from Earth to Mars and back.

👖1.6 billion unused items of clothes are currently owned by the UK population.

👟99% of a UK clothing item's life is spent in the closet, only being worn for less than 5 days on average.

This mass production of clothing uses a significant amount of the planet's clean water to produce, whilst also creating mass pollution from the production and transportation of clothing around the planet. The current throwaway culture then leads to mountains of clothing ending up in landfill each year 🏔️

Although we're nearing the end of September, you can still challenge yourself to shop second hand and consume clothing more sustainably. Below are some ideas for ways you can challenge yourself:

🎃 Going to a Halloween party this year? Why not challenge yourself to make your own costume from things you already own or shop second hand for your outfit.

📦Have unused items in your wardrobe? Why not sell them online or donate them to a local charity shop to keep clothing in circulation.

❄️As the weather gets colder, why not challenge yourself to buy your winter staples from a local charity shop instead of purchasing them new.

🧵Got an item in need of fixing? Why not challenge yourself to learn how to do simple fixes such as sewing a button on or fixing a small hole. There are lots of resources available for free online.

👯Be an outfit repeater! If you find yourself needing a new outfit for every occasion, challenge yourself to break this habit and wear the outfit twice. Additionally, you could challenge yourself to style a single item of clothing in multiple ways for multiple occasions. Get creative!
