Nottingham’s public transport set to benefit from £3.2million funding🚎

Nottingham bus

More than £3 million of external funding will be invested into Nottingham’s public transport network in 2025/26 thanks to the new East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA).

Through the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) Nottingham City Council has been working with Nottinghamshire County Council and local bus/tram operators to make real changes across the public transport network. This funding, supported by the Department for Transport and East Midlands Combined County Authority, aims to ensure authorities and operators continue to work together to improve services for passengers.

By improving our public transport network and increasing it's accessibility we're working towards becoming a carbon neutral city. Did you know that emissions from transport currently account for around a third of Nottingham's carbon emissions?

Our first Green Rewards community prize success🍓

Green Rewards community prize

Throughout June we ran our first ever Green Rewards Community Prize. For the challenge, Green Rewards users who live in the same ward area of Nottingham City had the points they earned combined, with the highest scoring ward winning the challenge. This time the winning ward was… Bulwell Forest! 🥳

Congratulations to all Bulwell Forest users who collectively earned a whopping 67,053 points in the month of June. Points were earned when users took sustainable actions such as saving energy at home or supporting wildlife – great job everyone!

From Bulwell Forest, the top 40 users won a pack of 4 plants courtesy of Allotment Education.

Allotment Education are a local social enterprise that delivers horticultural interventions in both mainstream and SEN schools. Based in Nottingham, they are dedicated to improving the lives of people through plants, by delivering focused horticultural sessions to children and young people in their educational setting.

All the plants offered as part of this Green Rewards prize have been grown from seed by children and young people at Nethergate Nursery, an initiative set up by Nethergate Academy to support its students in their horticultural development. Along with help from Allotment Education, pupils have worked tirelessly to sow and tend to these wildflowers and edible plants which have resulted in the prize of four companion plants for each Green Rewards winner. 🌻

Big thank you to our friends at Allotment E ducation and Nethergate Academy!

Plastic Free July™ is a global movement, ran by the Plastic Free Foundation, that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution. Find out more here 🐢

🥤What is plastic pollution?

Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing global environmental issues. It refers to the overwhelming accumulation of plastic waste in the environment which affects ecosystems, wildlife, and even human health.

A key driver of the crisis is the rapid rise in the production of disposable plastic products. Whilst these products offer convenience, they have led to a throw-away culture with single-use plastics now accounting for 40% of the plastic produced every year. Many of these products, such as plastic bags and food wrappers, have a lifespan of mere minutes to hours, yet they may persist in the environment for hundreds of years.

Plastic then accumulates in the environment and leads to many negative impacts such as the death of animals and marine wildlife, the build up of microplastics in the environment and the food chain, and negative impacts on human health 🐠

🥤 Three simple tips to begin your plastic reduction journey

  • Carry a reusable coffee cup or flask.
  • Switch the teabags for loose leaf tea or teabags that are suitable for home composting.
  • When buying new clothes, opt for natural fibres instead of synthetic clothing.
