The Nottingham City health and wellbeing survey will be available to schools again this year from the start of the September term to 14th November. The survey is aimed at years 6 and 10 (other year groups available) and is fully funded for all Nottingham schools. Administered and analysed by SHEU, the survey covers a range of health-related behaviours such as eating habits, physical activity levels, bullying, and emotional wellbeing. Schools receive an individualised report with a summary of their pupils’ responses giving invaluable data for reflection and improvement planning. To get involved, sign up here. For more information and to view sample reports visit the Achieve Well website.

The Netflix drama Adolescence has sparked widespread media discussion, with calls for it to be shown in schools. However, along with other PSHE/RSHE professionals, we believe this would not promote meaningful learning or positive behaviour change and could make students feel unsafe.
While the show raises important issues, these should be explored through a well-structured PSHE/RSHE curriculum in a safe learning environment—rather than as a reaction to a television drama. The PSHE Association has this resource to help schools address topics such as misogyny and online influences in a measured way.
Suggested actions:
-
Review your PSHE/RSHE curriculum to ensure key issues (e.g. misogyny, sexism, consent, healthy relationships, online influences) are adequately covered.
-
Assess staff confidence in discussing these topics with students and provide training if needed.
-
Gather student feedback on whether their learning needs in these areas are being met.
-
Inform parents about the show’s themes, how they can support their child, and how these issues are covered in your PSHE programme.
Our Padlet has resources and links around misogyny, misandry, sexism and sexual harassment.
For this year's RSE Day Art workshop collaboration with Challenge Nottingham, we are working with artist, Millie Yarwood, who will share the skills of mural creation with colleagues on 29th April from 2pm to 4pm at the Nottingham Trent University Dryden Centre. Colleagues will learn how they can create an in-house mural using Millie's techniques, this will be a practical workshop so come prepared to get creative! You can book a place on the workshop here.
In addition to the workshop, Millie will also be creating a mural in the arboretum featuring children’s views on healthy communication in relationships. We want to hear your pupils views on 5 key questions, shown here on our Padlet. For instructions on how to get involved click here.
Nottingham City has a significantly lower uptake of routine childhood vaccinations than the average for England, the East Midlands, and our Statistical Neighbours. Data shows that uptake percentages for the MMR vaccination and for the Dtap and IPV booster are well below the 95% World Health Organisation target required to sustain elimination of diseases such as measles and rubella.
As part of our response to this low uptake, we need your help! Thanks to funding provided by NHS England, we are offering a free, interactive training course titled "Encouraging Vaccination Uptake" designed to increase vaccination uptake rates in Nottingham. The course is open to anyone in Nottingham working or engaging with young people. It is available as a one-day session, two half-day sessions, or in short burst of 3 x 2.5 hours. The training provides participants with the knowledge and confidence to address concerns and discuss the importance of vaccinations with colleagues, parents, young people aged 14+ and the wider community.
Upon completion, participants receive a Level 2 Award in Encouraging Vaccination Uptake from the Royal Society for Public Health. This training is available both in-person and online. Click here to register your interest.

PSHE is a lesson unlike any other. It is a lesson that teaches young people life skills that support their journey into adulthood. In most lessons, the teacher is the source of knowledge, with students receiving information and showing their understanding through application. However, in PSHE, the teacher is often the facilitator of healthy and meaningful conversations that allow young people to explore their understanding and beliefs around the topic. This training aims to develop understanding of PSHE as a subject that builds life skills, how to create a safe learning environment, and more.
Session overview and objectives:
-
Understand the role of PSHE in fostering personal, social, and emotional growth
-
Identify key strategies for effective PSHE teaching and creating a safe, engaging learning environment
-
Gain confidence in handling complex discussions and safeguarding considerations
-
Learn how to embed PSHE across the wider curriculum and school ethos
- Be empowered to take next steps in refining PSHE delivery
This is an on demand training and can be accessed here.

Children under 16 will need a parent or guardian to start the survey off for them. The link to the consultation is here.
