UK's Core Cities leading on Net Zero targets 🎯

Nottingham is one of the Core Cities being recognised as taking innovative action to help the UK reach its net zero targets.

An article published by the Core Cities group highlights some of the work being done across UK cities to help reduce carbon emissions.

Nottingham is recognised for its work including the Workplace Parking Levy - a scheme which charges employers for providing workplace parking in the city. This scheme has raised almost £90million over 10 years which has been invested back into sustainable transport, such as the tram. 🚎 🚲

In addition, the article notes that the Greener HousiNG scheme delivered by Nottingham City Council has provided approximately 13,000 energy efficiency improvements to homes, such as insulation and renewable energy technology, helping to reduce bills and the associated carbon emissions.

Read more on what other cities around the country are doing to reduce their emissions in the article here!

e scooters

E-scooters return to Nottingham! 🛴

Nottingham City Council has announced the re-launch of e-scooters across the city. Dott has been chosen to operate the e-scooter scheme in Nottingham, offering a greener travel option to help take cars off our roads and improve air quality. The striking blue and red e-scooters are approved by the Department for Transport (DfT) and are used in other UK cities such as Bristol and Milton Keynes. The e-scooters are expected to be on the streets in early spring 2025 and will join e-bikes already available to hire.

Around 1300 e-scooters will be available to hire from approximately 300 mandatory parking locations across the city. Not only can choosing e-scooters improve air quality, it also reduces carbon emissions when compared to driving, helping to reduce our impact on climate change and bring us closer to our CN28 goal.

Nottz Garden Project

Greening the city with Nottz Garden Project 🍅🥕

A project to repurpose green spaces in cities is bringing accessible gardening and local food growing to Nottingham.

Together, Paul Cox and Micha Bradshaw run the Nottz Garden Project, growing fruit and vegetables on neglected land in the city.

Currently there are 5 plots of land in Radford and Hyson Green, with more to open soon. The pair want to encourage more people to get involved in gardening, especially in cities where access to green space and gardening is often limited.

Nottz Garden Project work in partnership with Himmah Food Bank, who use the fresh produce grown by the group to provide more people with healthy food.

Creating more green space is great for our mental and physical health, it can provide a habitat for wildlife, and helps to reduce flooding as plants absorb excess water. Not only that, but growing vegetables can give more people access to healthy food too!

flood

Have your say on flooding in Nottingham

Nottingham City Council invite you to shape the future of flood risk management in the city in their Flood Risk Management Survey.

The survey is open to everyone, and aims to gather feedback from local residents and communities in order to address their needs in future.

The Local Flood Risk Management Strategy explains how the council will manage and mitigate flood risk in the city, and is available for you to read before completing the survey.

Due to the warming effect of climate change, flooding is predicted to become more frequent as a warmer atmosphere can hold more water, so it's important that everyone is aware of how flooding will be managed in future.

Find out more and complete the survey here.

nottingham fixers

Don't bin it, fix it at the Repair Cafe! 🔨

In last months newsletter we shared information about the repair cafes that we have around Nottingham.

Here is the next upcoming date for your diary:

📅 8 February - Sherwood Methodist Church, Mansfield Road, NG5 2EN

Follow Nottingham Fixers here, or the Victoria Repair Cafe for events in West Bridgford.

Repairing what we already own is much more sustainable than binning and buying new. Not only is it good for the planet 🌍...it's a lot cheaper too 💰!
