Smokefree poster competition

Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Smoking and Tobacco Control Alliance are aiming to create a smoke free generation by 2040 and they need your support to do so!

This month in association with the Achieve Well Team, they have launched a poster competition for Nottingham City Junior pupils. The 3 winning smokefree/vape free posters will be used across the City at different events such as the Summer beach and will help to signpost more smokefree spaces across Nottingham City, reducing the exposure to second-hand smoke. They will also form part of the alliance’s smokefree toolkit.

There is a lesson plan to introduce the competition and help the children to create impactful posters whilst raising their awareness of the importance of smoke-free areas. The lesson may be customised as required and an alternative starting point is also provided to take account of the level of prior learning.

Full competition details including how to enter can now be found on our Smoking and Vaping Padlet.

The shortlisted designs will be shown at the Nottingham Healthy child conference on the 28th of November where the 3 winners will be selected by the delegates. All entries need to have been received by the end of day Monday 19th November.

Health and Wellbeing survey for schools closing soon!

The Nottingham City health and wellbeing survey is closing on 15 November.  The survey is aimed at years 6 and 10 (other year groups available) and is fully funded for all Nottingham schools. Administered and analysed by SHEU, the survey covers a range of health-related behaviours such as eating habits, physical activity levels, bullying, and emotional wellbeing.  Schools receive an individualised report with a summary of their pupils’ responses giving invaluable data for reflection and improvement planning.  The survey is open until mid-November – sign up here. Islamophobia Awareness Month

IAM 2024

Home Office data ending March 2024 shows that 38% of religious hate crimes recorded by the police were against Muslims.

Over 70% of young Muslims in the UK who say they experience mental health struggles, also say they have been victims of Islamophobia.

42% of Mosques experienced a religiously motivated attack in the last 3 years and of those, 83% have been attacked at least once a year.

59% of all articles associate Muslims with negative behaviour.

Be a part of the movement to support your Muslim friends, neighbours, and colleagues by taking part in Islamophobia Awareness Month (IAM) 2024! IAM takes place in November, raising awareness of Islamophobia in the UK and showcasing the positive contributions of Muslims to society. IAM’s theme for 2024 is Seeds of Change. The goal of this year’s campaign is to emphasise how small actions can lead to big change. Whether it’s starting a conversation, challenging someone’s views, or something more, we can all plant a seed to help tackle Islamophobia.

Movember Reimagined

NHC is Active

This November let’s reimagine Movember to boost physical and mental health for all! Studies show a drop in activity, especially among girls in Nottingham, from 61% in Year 6 to 47% by Year 10. Movember can help reverse this! Encourage families to stay active together with initiatives like the "Movember Mile." Promote diverse activities—walking, dancing, sports—and emphasize mental well-being. Share the benefits of Movember, offering inclusive options like father-daughter projects and activities for all family types. Let’s make Movember a month of movement, connection, and awareness for a healthier future!

Addressing Weight Issues for anti-bullying week

Educators play a vital role in creating a supportive, inclusive environment, especially around sensitive issues like weight. Emphasize “healthier lifestyle” over terms like “obese,” using growth charts to provide objective guidance. Schools can foster health by teaching about nutrition, physical activity, and lifestyle impacts, while offering nutritious meals and encouraging sports. Staff modelling healthy behaviours can build a wellness-focused culture. Addressing weight-related bullying is essential to maintaining a respectful school environment. Anti-Bullying Week’s theme, "Choose Respect," offers a great opportunity to promote kindness and inclusivity.

Migrant Help – Free School Programme and Workshops

Migrant Help

Children and young adults have often not yet fully formed their opinions around issues of displaced people - views that, once formed, may stay with them for a lifetime. Therefore Migrant Help have developed a school programme that supports professionals and schools in challenging the mindset of young people in the UK and promoting positive discussion around these issues.

There is an offer of assemblies and workshops to schools completely free of charge to help support schools and raise awareness. Head here to watch a short video outlining the offer.
