Anti-Bullying Alliance are the official organisers of Anti-Bullying Week and Odd Socks Day. This year, the campaign runs from Monday 11th November – Friday 15th November, with “Choose Respect” as the campaigns theme. The theme has come from consultation with teachers and pupils by the ABA, with schools saying they wanted a theme that empowered them to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes. Click here to head to the campaign page.
The call to action is “From playgrounds to parliament, our homes to our phones, this Anti-Bullying Week let's 'Choose Respect' and bring an end to bullying which negatively impacts millions of young lives. This year, we’ll empower children and young people to not resort to bullying, even when we disagree and remind adults to lead by example, online and offline. Imagine a world where respect and kindness thrives — it’s not just a dream, it's in the choices we make. Join us this Anti-Bullying Week and commit to 'Choose Respect'. What will you choose?”

Nottingham City Public Health and the Achieve Well Team have put together a new online resource pack for schools to help them address young people’s smoking and vaping. The resources include information, template policies, advice for dealing with smoking and vaping incidents, links to teaching resources, promotional materials, and information for sharing with children and parents / carers. There is also a feedback form where you can let us know what is most useful and what else you might like to see. There are some new resources in the pack too regarding the harms of vaping, that have been developed by Smokefree Sheffield, with support from ASH (Action on Smoking and Health). These have been adapted for our local area and include two posters aimed at young people - for display in schools, a parents’ leaflet, with tips for conversations with young people about vaping, an animation for sharing with young people to promote discussion and classroom presentation slides. Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Smoking and Tobacco Control Alliance are aiming to create a smoke free generation by 2040 and they need your support to do so!
This month in association with the Achieve Well Team, they have launched a poster competition for Nottingham City Junior pupils. The 3 winning smokefree/vape free posters will be used across the City at different events such as the Summer beach and will help to signpost more smokefree spaces across Nottingham City, reducing the exposure to second-hand smoke. They will also form part of the alliance’s smokefree toolkit.
There is a lesson plan to introduce the competition and help the children to create impactful posters whilst raising their awareness of the importance of smoke-free areas. The lesson may be customised as required and an alternative starting point is also provided to take account of the level of prior learning.
Full competition details including how to enter can now be found on our Smoking and Vaping Padlet.
The shortlisted designs will be shown at the Nottingham Healthy child conference on the 28th of November where the 3 winners will be selected by the delegates. All entries need to have been received by the end of day Monday 19th November.
