Work on the first new bridge over the river in over 60 years is expected to begin early in 2025
Nottingham City Council’s ambitious project to build a new 85metre long pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Trent between Trent Basin and Lady Bay has reached a new milestone, with the project expected to receive a final approval from the Council at its Executive Board meeting on 22 October.
Once this approval is given, the project will get a final go-ahead from the Department for Transport before contracts are signed and work can begin in the new year.
The bridge will be the flagship, and final project to come out of the City Council’s Transforming Cities Fund programme, which began in 2020 following a successful bid for over £160million of central Government funding for projects which encourage inter-city connectivity and lower carbon journeys.

 Thanks to £631,000 from the Government’s Department for Transport, work will start soon to upgrade Nottingham’s traffic signals to energy-efficient LED lights instead of halogen lamps. The council will use the funding to boost reliability and reduce faults to provide a safer experience for motorists as well as longer-term maintenance savings.
Over the next 18 months, approximately 60 junctions and 70 crossings will be kitted out with new equipment across all areas of the city. Over 50% of traffic lights are already upgraded to the new LED style.

We're making Queens Drive and Meadows Way safer and better by adding new crossings, two toucan crossings on Queens Drive and a zebra crossing and parallel crossing for cyclists on Meadows Way
Enabling works have begun this week and traffic will be managed around the site by temporary two-way traffic lights and some parking spaces suspended in order to create a safe working area for the four-week duration.
A road closure is required on Meadows Way between Ainsworth Drive and Crossgate Drive to install ducting and create a raised crossing platform between Monday 21st and Friday 25th October.

 A Nottingham City Council Levelling Up-funded project to improve road safety around schools is now complete. In total 89 flashing amber lights and 183 school signs have been installed. This creates a safer space outside the school gates to encourage more people to walk, cycle or scoot to school. Over half of the primary schools in the city received the upgrade to make the approach to schools clearer and safer for both walkers and drivers. The council has also removed old equipment to make the areas tidier.

The last week has been a difficult one for those travelling around Maid Marian Way. We’re making important changes to improve connectivity in this part of the city, including upgrading the roundabout to a T-junction, which has led to traffic delays.
We knew this would be a difficult time and our teams have been working hard to balance the needs of buses, drivers and pedestrians. They have been on-site around the clock monitoring traffic flow, tweaking signal timings and signage and road markings to help traffic run as smoothly as possible – and the good news is that these changes are reducing delays.
Despite months of planning with our partners including the bus operators, delays were inevitable and for this we apologise. If it's possible, allow more time to plan your journey and consider using alternative routes. Please be assured we will continue to do everything we can to monitor and improve the situation.

The Future High Streets government-funded Maid Marian Way project will continue until summer 2025 - once complete, the new T-junction will be a more welcoming gateway to the city with greenery, rain gardens and improved facilities for cyclists and pedestrians.

 A scheme to connect safe cycling routes in the city centre with wider improvements for cyclists and pedestrians has now been completed.
The £7.8m Cross-City Cycle Routes programme, which is funded through the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund, began in 2021 and is now finished.
The final project started in January this year on the junction of Fisher Gate, Pennyfoot Street and Parliament Street, extending the programme to the east of the city.

Our project to add 170m of protected cycle path and improved footpath to Mansfield Road is complete!
The new section of cycle path runs from Goose Fair roundabout to Pelham Avenue, and we continue to looking to the future, we'll continue to work on plans to develop connections to the north on Mansfield Road and Hucknall Road as well as along Gregory Boulevard.
