Marking Remembrance Sunday under lockdown

A message from City Council Leader, Cllr David Mellen:

Cllr David Mellen, leader of Nottingham City Council

Remembrance Sunday is a time to remember those who sacrificed their lives in conflict for our freedoms and democracy and to pay our respects to them. This year the day will have to be marked differently to comply with the new national lockdown restrictions. The traditional wreath laying and two-minute silence at Victoria Embankment will not proceed as a public event due to the need to avoid large gatherings.

In its place, Notts TV will broadcast a special Service of Remembrance (Freeview channel 7, Virgin 159, in addition to an online catch-up service) between 10.35-11.40am. This will come live from St Mary’s Church. Projections of cascading poppies will be beamed on to the Victoria Embankment memorial on the evening of Sunday 8 November between dusk to 9pm. The Royal British Legion is also asking people to download poppy images to display in their windows here: https://www.poppyshop.org.uk/products/download-a-remembrance-poppy

Thanks for your efforts so far – please keep going to make the lockdown count

Nottingham Skyline

As we approach our first weekend under the second national lockdown, it is encouraging to see that our efforts to suppress the virus in Nottingham are working. We had the largest surge in cases in the country a few weeks ago, but are now seeing one of the quickest falls as well, with cases per 100,000 dropping to 391 from a peak of around 1,000. At the heart of the rules, handwashing, mask wearing and social distancing remain absolutely crucial, along with staying at home and avoiding meeting people you don’t live with, beyond some specific exceptions.

I would like to thank everyone who is following the guidance as it’s clearly having the desired effect. Adhering to these rules stands us in good stead to come out of lockdown in a good place ahead of Christmas. However, we’re not out of the woods yet. Cases are falling among the younger population but rising among older people who can be more severely affected by Covid. We all therefore need to stick rigidly to the new national lockdown rules and keep an eye out for our elderly relatives, friends and neighbours.

Guidance and support for the clinically extremely vulnerable

The Government has updated its guidance for those who are Clinically Extremely Vulnerable (CEV). The guidance includes stay home as much as possible, ask others to collect your food or medicine, safely meet one person for outdoor exercise and do not attend a workplace. If you are in the CEV category, the Government will write to you with their full guidance. Remember, if you need help, you can call the council on 0115 915 5555 and there’s more information here.

Council services affected by national lockdown

The City Council has looked at the services it provides and has had to make some changes in line with the Government’s national lockdown rules. We know that many people rely on our services and so I’m pleased that many are operating as normal. But some are running differently, such as libraries, markets, museums, day centres and community centres, while others are closing altogether for the period of the lockdown. This includes leisure centres, the Royal Concert Hall and Theatre Royal, Tourist Information Centre and events. Please click here for further information.
