Cllr Nick McDonald

Introduction from Councillor Nick McDonald.

Hi! As portfolio holder for Growth and Transport I am keen to ensure that all local people and businesses are kept fully informed on what’s happening on Nottingham’s roads and public transport networks. The transport network is critical to supporting our local economy, helping people get to and from work, go shopping and access essential facilities like schools and hospitals. Each month, I send out an update on the latest developments, with news about what we are doing to manage the network as well as to make improvements. If you want to know more, please email Transport.Strategy@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

This month we provide an update on key roadwork's that may affect your journeys, including upcoming events at the Nottingham intu Victoria Centre, we have an update on Nottingham's new Taxi Strategy, and we provide an update on the roll-out of electric buses.

Councillor Nick McDonald, Portfolio Holder for Business, Growth and Transport at Nottingham City Council.

Nottingham Road Works

Roads do more than just carry traffic. Beneath the surface is a maze of pipes and cables, including electricity, gas, water, sewerage and telecommunciations.  The utility companies work with us to manage the traffic disruption, when they want to dig up a road to either repair or improve their networks. Sometimes that can be a challenge, if it’s part of the strategic traffic network or if an emergency repair is required. We do our best to keep everyone informed of current and planned roadworks within the City.  Most works have very little impact on traffic flows, but some can have an impact, and the following list is the planned road works for the next couple of months. For more information on your local roadwork  please email: highway.management@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

    Eco Express Way Image

    Eco Expressway works continue

Works on the Eco Expressway continue to develop the City's first priority lane for electric buses and ULEVs (Ultra Low Electric Vehicles) with Section One running from Manvers Street/Sneinton Hermitage junction to the junction of Daleside Road/Trent Lane developing the construction of the Cycle City Eastern Corridor, which is due to complete this month.

Section two has already begun from Trent Lane Roundabout to Racecourse Roundabout which will see some disruption to traffic where road widening will be taking place to make room for the bus and ULEV priority lane including a two way segregated cycle lane.

    Canning Circus

    Canning Circus Fire

Many of you will have been affected by the traffic problems we encountered on 2nd February 2017 when a building caught fire at Canning Circus, the junction where Derby Road, Ilkeston Road and Alfreton Road all converge, just to the west of the city centre. The road closures caused major delays for traffic during the evening peak period, and despite our staff working late into the evening to manage traffic signals, lane closures etc, it was impossible for us to prevent the delays to road users. The building had to be demolished the next morning, and staff did a good job of minimising delays when lanes were closed during the morning rush hour and during the demolition.

This incident demonstrated the sensitivity of our traffic system to unforeseen events like this, and whilst we’ll never prevent traffic problems when this type of incident occurs, we are reviewing our network management plans to see how we can improve the resilience of the network and reduce delays. Transport Nottingham will provide further updates on this issue, through this newsletter, over the coming months.

    Clutter busting update

Work is now being completed in a part of the city centre to reduce the amount of unnecessary street furniture. Streets in the Lace Market area, including High Pavement and Stoney Street, have had a number of redundant columns, bollards and other street items removed, and others are being combined to reduce clutter, or being painted to help them blend in to the attractive street environment. We are also responding to a number of complaints about traffic direction signs which still point to redundant locations. Unfortunately, not all of these signs are in our control as some are on the A52 which is a Trunk road and managed by Highways England, but we have asked them to review their signs. If you know of a sign that is out of date and should be removed, please tell us at Transport.Strategy@nottinghamcity.gov.uk
