Another
busy month for Nottingham libraries as we head into Spring. Highlights this
month include a new exhibition at Central Library,
an evening talk with author Stephan Collishaw, a new
theatre offer for children and an opportunity
to get involved in this year’s Nottingham
Children's Book Awards.
Author Talk: Stephan Collishaw
Join us for an evening with Stephan Collishaw,
the Nottingham author of “Last Girl” and
“Amber“, when he will be discussing his latest
book, “The Song of the Stork”.
Tuesday 4 April at 6pm at Nottingham Central Library.

Hearing Deaf Voices
'Hearing Deaf Voices' is unique exhibition celebrating the rich history, language and culture of Nottinghamshire Deaf Society and of the deaf community. The exhibition reveals the positive contribution the Nottinghamshire deaf community has made to society and brings their stories to life. The exhibition runs from Monday 6 to Friday 31 March, at Central Library on the first floor exhibition space.
Associated Workshops
Wednesday
8 March, 10am- 4pm. The Nottingham Deaf Society
are running a basic British Sign Language workshop, so drop in and learn the
alphabet and basic greetings and phrases.
Wednesday 8 March, 2pm. Mo Cooper,
Project Manager of the exhibition, will be delivering a talk about the history of Nottingham’s deaf
community.

Join a Library Club
Library Clubs meet monthly and host talks from invited guest experts on a range of subjects. Everyone is welcome to attend and it is a great way to meet people in your local community.
This month's talk is 'The Sandstone Caves of Nottingham', an illustrated talk on the history, geology and construction of Nottingham’s caves with Dr Tony Waltham.
This talk is being delivered at Basford Library on Tuesday 14March 10.30-11.30am and Sherwood Library on Thursday 16 March 10-11am at Sherwood Library.
The talks are free and all are welcome – no booking required.
Nottingham Children's Book Awards
2017 will be the 17th year that we have been running the
Nottingham Children’s Book Award. Last year we received nearly 6000 votes and
we need your help in beating that total this year!
Library staff and local children have helped to shortlist this year’s contenders:
Walter’s Wonderful Web by Tim Hopgood, Dave’s Cave by Frann
Preston-Gannon and Don’t Wake Up Tiger! by Britta Teckentrup.
You can see the books being read aloud and vote for your favourite here. Or you can pop into any Nottingham City Library and use the voting chart.
With three fantastic books to choose from, which one will you choose?
The closing date for voting is 9 June and the winner will be announced on 16 June.
Dance comes to Nottingham Libraries
Made with young audiences in mind, high quality dance performance Where The River Runs tells the simple story of a stranger trying to cross a river, and what happens when the water comes to life and starts a wild and wonderful journey. With stunning movement and spectacular lifts, this dynamic and beautiful story, set in the rain forest, will have children and families captivated and enthralled.
Suitable for ages 5+. Running Time: 50 minutes including family activity.
£2 per child.
Accompanying adults free. Book by telephone (numbers above) or by popping into the participating libraries.
Award Winners!
We are delighted that the Nottingham Performing Arts Library Service (NPALS) have won Best Local Authority Arts Initiative in the 2017 Hearts for the Arts Awards, a new initiative to reward and thank Councils, Councillors and Council Officers who are overcoming financial challenges to ensure the arts stay at the centre of community life.
One of the judges, Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE, commented that it was “an outstanding initiative, demonstrating resourceful and creative thinking, outside of the box".

NPALS has over 6000 drama and music sets across a wide genre available to loan by groups, in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, interested in the performing arts.
Changes to Opening Hours
On 1 April 2017 there will be some changes to the opening hours at Nottingham City Libraries.
