Welcome to the latest edition of Waste and Recycling News from Nottingham City Council. Our e-newsletter will provide you with current information on our services, plus tips and advice on how you can help keep Nottingham clean.

Because of the public holidays, some green and recycling bin collection days will change.
Ensuring your bin is out for collection is even more important over Christmas and New Year. Households usually accumulate more waste so putting bins out for collection keeps neighbourhoods cleaner and safer.
Please take a note of your new collection dates by downloading the handy guide below:
http://documents.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/download/3792
Making sure your bin is out on the correct date ensures our crews can work more efficiently and your bin is emptied when it should be.
Why not add the changes to your diary or phone calendar so you don't miss out on the new collection dates?
Please remember to have your bin out for collection by 7am and be aware that severe weather may affect our collections.

The more you can recycle this Christmas - the easier it is to manage your household waste and not overload your green residual waste bins which can cause issues for our crews.
We have put together some handy tips below:
- Have a think about what could be reused next year. Wrapping paper, bows, gift bags?
- Crafts for the kids? A lot of materials can be really valuable for crafts days - plastic bottles could be decorated, Christmas cards could be cut up and parts used for cards next year.
- Paper, card, wine bottles, glass jars, plastic bottles, tubs, pots and trays, tins and cans can all be recycled in your grey lidded recycling bin.
As well as materials, UK households are still throwing away £12 billion worth of food each year and one in three of us think we waste more food over Christmas and New Year than at any other time of the year.
Some top tips to reduce food waste are below:
- Make soup, curry, pie or stock with your leftover turkey carcass
- Food such as stilton cheese or pork pie can be frozen and used at a later date.
- Blend cooked turkey in a food processor to make turkey mince. Freeze and use at a later date.
- Christmas pudding can be refrigerated for up to three months
- Slice Christmas cake and freeze it with greaseproof paper between each piece so you don't have to defrost an entire cake.

Food poverty continues to be a serious issue. Thirteen million people live below the poverty line in the UK, with individuals going hungry every day for a range of reasons, from benefit delays to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income.
If you still have a
lot of Christmas food left over - why not donate it to your local food bank?
Nottinghamshire Advice Network (NAN) has been funded by the Big Lottery Fund to create an online directory of food banks across the county.
You can access their directory here - enter 'Foodbanks' in the search category.
