Welcome to the July edition of the Age Friendly Nottingham (AFN) Bulletin.

I hope you are enjoying the warmer weather and managing to get out and about. Remember to look out for the Age Friendly flower logo in shop windows in local areas - it means that the business will offer older people a seat if they need to catch their breath.

At Age Friendly Nottingham we are busy planning for the celebrations to celebrate Older People’s Day on 1 October. I’m sure that quite a few of you are also making plans to mark this special day - please let us know what they are.

Take a Seat Launched in Leen Valley

Take a Seat was launched in Leen Valley on Tuesday 19 July by Councillor Eunice Campbell and the Lord Mayor Councillor Mohammed Saghir. To celebrate they were joined by local residents and business owners Aspley Do It All DIY and Lianne Marie Hair Salon, on Aspley Lane provided venues for the launch.

Aspley, Basford and the city centre will see their launch events take place in the autumn to coincide with International Older Peoples Day’ on 1st October 2016.

Public Health Forum – Healthy Ageing, Frailty and Supported Self-Care

There will be a public health forum on Wednesday 10 August 2016 at Loxley House NG2 3NG. The aims of the session are to

To introduce the context of frailty in Nottingham and how it links to existing programmes
To provide an understanding of frailty and its dynamic nature
To explain recent developments to identify and assess frailty
To hear about opportunities to promote and maintain independence
To have the opportunity to experience a virtual reality frailty simulation
To introduce and provide access to the Nottinghamshire Frailty Toolkit App

Age UK Nottingham and Nottinghamshire (AUNN) are helping residents to avoid becoming victims of fraud

AUNN is working with a range of community groups and individuals to provide advice on how to spot fraudulent activity and stop it happening to them or people they know or care for. Aimed at those aged 55+ the campaign will look at the most common scams, and what people can do to protect themselves from becoming a victim. Some of the tips include:

Never give your bank card or PIN to anyone
Never send money to anyone you don’t know or pay fees to claim prizes or lottery winnings
Don’t be afraid to put the phone down to cold callers or to end the call with a brief “No, thank you”
Take your time and don’t be pressured into a commitment – ask questions or seek a second opinion from someone you trust.
Don’t call unfamiliar numbers or reply to unsolicited texts as these may charge at premium rates

Click Nottingham announces Nottingham's first Homeshare project

Social enterprise Click Nottingham launches Click Homeshare, creating innovative living arrangements, to allow older people to remain independent while providing affordable accommodation and a stable, comfortable home to younger individuals. Householders will be matched with a Homesharer who provides up to 10 hours of help in the home each week in exchange for accommodation. This might involve help with shopping, meal preparation, housework or gardening. Both parties share time together, learning from each other and bringing companionship and friendship to each other.

Become a Dementia Friends Champion

Become a Dementia Friends Champion by attending this whole day volunteer induction session on 11 August 2016, from 10am until 4pm.

You’ll participate in a Dementia Friends Information Session delivered by a Regional Support Officer and learn how to deliver such a session yourself - along with the chance to discuss the activities and our key messages, before taking part in a practice presentation. Tea and coffee will be provided but please bring your own lunch. Booking is essential. For more details go to Dementia Friends

Free photography courses for adults with mental health problems September 2016 to June 2017

From September 2016, Nottingham Photographers’ Hub is running free courses on Digital Photography in the city centre. Each course lasts 10 weeks, on a Thursday or Friday afternoon and sessions last 3 hours. Cameras are provided, but you can bring your own if you prefer.

At the end of the course, there will be an exhibition where you can show your work to family and friends. The people at the Photographers’ Hub are happy to talk to you about any concerns you may have before you join them.

NHS Nottingham City CCG - New Commissioning Strategy 2016-2020

Nottingham city residents are being asked to help shape this new commissioning strategy which will set out how the CCG will address the city’s health challenges. Through the strategy the CCG aim to:

Increase the number of years that local people live in good health, meaning that people are healthier for longer
Improve the health of those who have the worst health in the city
Support and encourage local people to improve their own health

To achieve these aims they need to hear from people across the city so that our their plans reflect what people really need to improve their health. To take part, complete the short online survey by 12 August 2016.

Trent PTS is an independent Psychological Therapies Service funded by the NHS. Our service is FREE. One in four people will experience mental health problems at some point in their life.
