New pétanque and hockey club sessions

Boule

This summer, you can benefit from the expertise and friendly encouragement of two Nottingham sports clubs while trying out pétanque or hockey for nothing, thanks to FREEsport.

Nottingham City Pétanque Club is opening its doors to give you the chance to try out this fun sport, suitable for all ages.  You may know it as boules or French bowls and have seen or played it on holiday on the beach or in a town square in France or Spain, but it's now surprisingly popular in the UK.  It's a simple, gentle game, similar to bowls but played on gravel with steel boules.  Sessions are taking place at Valley Road Playing Fields on Sunday afternoons until 21 August.  Equipment is supplied but wear sensible footwear and no open-toed sandals.

Alternatively, Nottingham Players Hockey Club will be running simple Back to Hockey sessions for people who haven't played for a while or complete beginners each Wednesday evening from 3 to 24 August at Nottingham Hockey Centre.  You will learn to stop and push the ball so you can play in a small-sided game and have a run around.  Afterwards it can turn into a social occasion if you want to stay for a drink and a chat in the centre's bar.

When you come to the end of your FREEsport introductory sessions, you'll be able to join the club to continue playing and improving your technique in the company of your new sporting friends.  For more information about these and other FREEsport sessions, including timetables and how to book, go to http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/freesport.
