Welcome to the June edition of the Age Friendly Nottingham (AFN) Bulletin.  It was a pleasure yesterday to see so many older people enjoying the sunshine in the Old Market Square and at the same time benefiting from advice, support and information on how to improve their bone health (and more).  AFN member Sally Garlick from Nottingham CityCare Partnership had pulled together different services to celebrate Falls and Bone Health Awareness Day and the event was being enjoyed by all. The Dales Take a Seat

Later Life Matters Later Life Matters will bring together a wealth of information to help older people make the most from later lifestyle, covering a huge range of interesting topics. With over 50 exhibitors, engaging demonstrations and expert talks on subjects such as financial planning, cancer care, legal considerations, support in your home, dementia and technology advice - why not come and find out how you can make the most of later life? Join in the fun at ParkLives Older residents are able to take advantage of free and fun activity sessions taking place as ParkLives returns for a second year in parks and green spaces across the city. This year the programme will offer more than 20 fun and informal activities including paddleboard yoga, Nordic walking and archery, alongside returning favourites such as basketball and Tai Chi.  The timetabled sessions are an hour long and led by trained activity leaders from the local area. The action started in May and will run through to October. Parks taking part this year include Forest Recreation Ground, Colwick Country Park, Radford Recreation Ground, Victoria Embankment Park and Highfields Park (pictured).  Find out more about our summer activities here…

A Celebration of Older People Service - Wednesday, 22 June 2016 Have a trip out to Southwell Minister at 2.00 pm on 22 June to join celebrations of older people, which feature Tony Wade, poet and songwriter; David Colton and members of New Cross Community Church, who will lead the congregational singing, and the Venerable Sarah Clark, who will be preaching. More mental health support in Nottingham A new support service has been set up to help people with mental health problems. Wellness In Mind has opened as a central point in Nottingham for mental health services, with advice and information available. It will bring people together in a city-wide support network, challenge stigma and improve access to help, including housing, debt and employment issues.

Post-Diagnostic Support

The Dementia Action Alliance are exploring current post-diagnostic support (PDS). Through their survey, they are seeking the views of  people living with dementia and carers, and also comments from health and social care organisations. Closing date for responses to the surveys is 27 June:

There are two exciting opportunities for individual patients and organisations from the voluntary and community sector to help develop NHS health services across Nottingham City:

• Patient Leaders – will work alongside City doctors and health managers and sit on our People’s Council to improve local services. Training and development will be provided. 
• VCS People’s Council Members – will represent the needs of different communities on the People’s Council to improve local services.

New Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2016-2020

The Nottingham City Health and Wellbeing Board have been developing their new strategy for 2016 to 2020. To help shape the strategy they held a range of events with citizens and partners to find out what is important to people in terms of their health and happiness. NHS Nottingham City CCG - New Commissioning Strategy 2016-2020

Nottingham city residents are being asked to help shape this new commissioning strategy which will set out how the CCG will address the city’s health challenges.  Through the strategy the CCG aim to:

• Increase the number of years that local people live in good health, meaning that people are healthier for longer
• Improve the health of those who have the worst health in the city
• Support and encourage local people to improve their own health

To achieve these aims they need to hear from people across the city so that our plans reflect what people really need to improve their health.  To take part, complete the short online survey by 12 August 2016.

This consultation seeks views on a new strategy for carers that will set out how more can be done to support them. The closing date for comments is 30 June 2016.

Mental Wellbeing at Work

Business in the Community have launched their National Employee Mental Wellbeing Survey. They are conducting the UK’s largest survey of mental wellbeing at work in the UK, taking place annually over 3 years. The survey is confidential and will be open until 29 July. New State Pension Myth-Buster

If you are a man born on or after 6 April 1951 or a woman born on or after 6 April 1953 the DWP has produced an online myth-buster

Carers may be able to increase their State Pension

Many carers don’t realise that they’re missing out on a National Insurance credit. Each year’s credit could boost their State Pension by £230 a year once they reach State Pension age (2016/17 figures).  Check if you are eligible for Carer’s Credit (https://www.gov.uk/carers-credit) or Watch the video here.

National Insurance Contributions for employees over State Pension age

Once an employee has reached State Pension age they no longer have to pay employees’ (primary) Class 1 NICs. These employees should be moved to NICs category letter ‘C’ on their first payday once they have reached State Pension age. Employers will continue to pay secondary Class 1 NICs for these employees. Differences between DLA and PIP – new information available

A new factsheet, “Disability Living Allowance and Personal Independence Payment – the main differences”, has been published. DLA is ending for most people and this factsheet includes information for DLA claimants to help them decide whether to claim PIP. To find out more, click here.

Learning Opportunity

Making New Moves and Building New Futures Two new courses for older learners at Nottingham Trent University in the School of Social Sciences.  Classes will last 3 hours per week, and will probably take place on Wednesday afternoons. Introducing Social Sciences will consider topics such as personal change and human relationships.  Growing Older in Britain Today will examine some key issues associated with ageing in society including how health and social policy, and technology are shaping the experience of later life.
