Ladies draw - Pliskova added to the line-up
The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has confirmed that World No. 19 Karolina Pliskova has been awarded a wild card into the main draw of the Aegon Open Nottingham, starting Saturday, 4 June.
With two days to go before qualifying for the WTA International tournament starts, Pliskova is the latest high-profile addition to an already world-class field that includes two former World No. 1 players, Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Wozniacki, as well as British No. 1 Johanna Konta.
Pliskova, has won four WTA titles and helped the Czech Republic retain their Fed Cup title in 2015, climbed to a career-high ranking of seven in August last year after reaching the final of the Aegon Classic Birmingham.
JOIN TENNIS STARS, ROBIN HOOD AND THE SHERIFF OF NOTTINGHAM FOR AEGON OPEN DRAW
The public will have a chance to get involved in the Aegon Open by joining some of the stars of world tennis, Robin Hood and The Sheriff of Nottingham for the main draw ceremony in the heart of the city on Saturday, 4 June at 3pm.
World No. 19 Karolina Pliskova will be the player to headline the draw ceremony, hosted by none other than Robin Hood, with The Sheriff of Nottingham Councillor Jackie Morris also involved in the event taking place at Smithy Row.
The draw ceremony will see players mingle with the public as they are called upon to dip their hand into The Elena Baltacha Trophy and participate in the making of main draw of the WTA International event – one of the major pre-Wimbledon grass-court events.
Players will also pick up racquets to get involved in the Free Tennis Have a Go Day taking place at Smithy Row which is being supported by Nottingham Building Society.
Former
Wimbledon champions Pat Cash and Jeremy Bates will be part of the exhibition
line-up to hit centre court in Nottingham on WTA Finals Day at the Aegon Open
on 12 June.
Australian tennis great Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon champion, will be
joined at the Nottingham Tennis Centre by former British No. 1 Anne Keothavong
and two-time Grand Slam mixed doubles champion Bates for a mixed doubles
exhibition match at 12noon on what will be an action-packed day for the
culmination of the WTA International tournament.
Cash said: “The chance to play
grass-court tennis during the British summer is always special. You never tire
of the atmosphere that is generated by the public in the build up to Wimbledon.
I’ve heard great things about how the Aegon Open has been embraced in
Nottingham and for me, it is an opportunity to play at a venue where I’ve not
previously played.”
