Station Street Improvement Works Special Edition
The
direction of traffic on Trent Street and Station Street will change from
Wednesday (23 March) as Nottingham City Council’s £1.375m Station Street
improvements reach the next phase.
The
improvements are progressing along Station Street, which along with Trent
Street will become one way to improve the flow of traffic around the station. Vehicles
will enter Trent Street from Canal Street and exit Station Street onto London
Road. The taxi rank on Station Street
will also be relocated to Trent Street. The changes will be made between 5am
and 6am on Wednesday and appropriate signs will be put in place.
The
scheme, which is being part-funded by European money and is expected to be
complete by July, features new paving, road surfaces, street lights, traffic
management measures and enhancements to the appearance of the area. Trees will be planted towards the end of the
works. The scheme is being carried out
to help regenerate the area around Nottingham Station, complementing its recent
£60m transformation, the new Nottingham Station tram stop, which is fully
integrated with the railway station, and the £1.7m Townscape Heritage programme
to restore historical shop fronts in the Carrington Street area.
Preparatory
works for the Station Street scheme started in September last year and the
works have also involved ground investigations, the repair of a collapsed sewer,
the installation of new drainage and the incorporation of underground pipes
that utility companies can use in future to save them digging up the road.
When it
is finished, Station Street from Carrington Street to Trent Street will consist
of an easily accessible paved area for pedestrians and cyclists. It will be available for outdoor café seating
and pop-up market stalls.
Councillor
Nick McDonald, Portfolio Holder for Jobs, Growth and Transport, said: “We are
reaching the final stages of this scheme now and the areas that are almost
finished are looking great. Pedestrians
are already finding it easier and more pleasant to walk through this area and
the changes to the traffic flow from Sunday will improve safety as well.
“Along
with the restoration of historic shop fronts in the Carrington Street area, under
the Townscape Heritage scheme, it will really transform this part of the city and
create a fantastic gateway from the railway station.”
Nasser
Ahmed, the Secretary for Nottingham Taxi Association said, “We are happy to
help with the changes which will improve safety for pedestrians, drivers and
our customers.”
The
scheme is funded by Nottingham City Council, the European Regional Development
Fund and the Government through City Deal and D2N2’s Local Growth Fund.
