Community Learning MK is offering several craft courses for beginners this term - try your hand at a new skill and discover a new hobby.

Knitting for Beginners

Introduction to Needle Felting

Saturday 27 January – Central MK Library

Morning session 10am-12.30pm - £32

Needle felting is a calm and relaxing craft in which you take wool fibres and agitate them with a specialised needle until they bond together to create a solid fabric.

You will learn about the tools for the craft, including how fibres vary in their properties and uses. The techniques for needle felting onto a felt base to create a desired image or shape and embellish it with beads and embroidery. All materials will be provided on the day to complete the project.

Introduction to Crewel Embroidery

Spend the day learning this beautiful embroidery technique which uses threads and materials to create a raised, dimensional work. All materials will be provided on the day to complete the project.

Japanese Sashiko for Beginners

Are you looking for a new hand stitching technique to help you unwind? This ancient Japanese art of meditative stitching is great for visible mending projects or simply for creating beautiful designs on fabric. Once you can sew a running stitch, you will be able to embroider Sashiko patterns.

You’ll learn the history of this folk craft and be given a step-by-step guide to Sashiko stitching, learning how to mark your fabric and transfer patterns ready for stitching. All materials will be provided on the day to complete the project.

Stained Glass – Copper Foiled Sun Catchers

One-day workshop starting at 10am - £48

Make a stained glass sun catcher on this one-day workshop. The course is designed for those with an interest in stained (cool) glass and/or beginners looking for a new creative hobby that is both rewarding and therapeutic. No previous knowledge or experience is needed to join this class.

During the day you will learn and practice one of the techniques used in the construction of stained (cool) glass items. This will then be applied as you make a simple copper foil sun catcher. You will also develop an awareness of the influence of colour, line and texture to inform the design of 2D stained glass items.

You will be introduced to techniques, tooling, materials and equipment used in the design and making of stained glass items. This knowledge will then be developed through practical exercises and the construction of your own sun catcher.

There is an additional £20 charge to cover the cost of materials on the day.

Slow Stitching – Creative Hand Embroidery

Morning session 9.30am to 12pm - £32

This course is about slowing down, relaxing, and enjoying the process of creating without worrying about perfection or focusing solely on the final product. It is a mindful, fun, and forgiving way to explore and develop your creative embroidery skills.

You will learn a range of hand embroidery stitches, from running, stem, blanket, and chain stitch to French knots, daisy, feather, fern, and cross stitches. You will build up a fabric collage design, which you can embellish with the stitches, beads, buttons, or sequins. You will be shown how to construct a simple hand stitched purse to which your slow stitch design can be added.

All materials will be provided on the day to complete the project.
