Teaching students to be healthcare workers of the future
Gaby Kalley is our Clinical Skills and Simulation Facilitator and works in the Simulation Team, based in the Education Centre. One aspect of her role is to organise sessions for students studying Health and Social Care Level 2 and 3 at Mid Kent College.
The Simulation Team deliver the sessions every Wednesday both face to face and virtually, with Gaby liaising with clinicians to plan the academic year.
The sessions allow the students to get an insight into the different areas here at the Trust and help them to see where they would like to work when their course finishes.
Gaby led a session in December 2022 covering the National Early Warning Scoring (NEWS). She said: “I gave the students an initial overview of what NEWS is, how it is used and why.
"They were then shown examples of patients who had come into hospital with certain parameters and I asked them to fill the NEWS out accordingly.
“This was a huge success with the students, they all enjoyed the practical side of it and the feedback was all positive.”
Aiming for a greener NHS future
The NHS Kent and Medway Green Plan was launched in November 2022 with an event for colleagues across the Integrated Care System. Its aim was to promote Trusts’ across the system working collaboratively to deliver sustainable healthcare. Louise Stewart, our Sustainability and Business Performance Manager was asked to present our Green Plan on behalf of the Trust.
The Trust’s Green Plan sets out aims, objectives and delivery plans for carbon reduction to support NHS net carbon zero ambitions. The Trust purchases green electricity and is currently looking into energy efficiency options and will be focusing on waste, recycling and water reduction.
The Building a Net Zero NHS training course demonstrates the link between the climate crisis, how healthcare contributes to it and how we can reduce carbon, costs, waste and improve care quality. To complete it, log into your Electronic Staff Record, click on My Learning and search for Building a Net Zero NHS.
Island roadshow
L-R Alison Streatfield, Cllr John Wright, Cllr David Brake, Haley Wawrzewska, Cllr Angela Harrison
Our Engagement Team were at Sheppey Community Hospital last week talking about the new Sheppey Frailty Unit which opens later this month.
They were joined by nursing colleagues Alison Streatfield, Head of Nursing and Haley Wawrzewska, Matron who will run the unit when it opens, to answer questions from members of the public.
Our Public Governors for Swale, Cllr John Wright and Cllr Angela Harrison, and our Lead Governor Cllr David Brake, were also on hand gathering valuable feedback and views from patients.
There were some very positive comments, with most people the team spoke to saying how good it was local frail patients needing hospital admission would have the opportunity to be cared for closer to home.
You can find further information about the Sheppey Frailty Unit on our website.
If you would like to give feedback on the unit, please email our Engagement Team on met-tr.members-medway@nhs.net.
January’s NHS People Pulse Survey is now open!
As part of an open and supportive culture, it’s really important to us that we hear your views about working for the Trust as your responses will help us make informed decisions about improvements that matter to you.
It takes just five minutes to complete the NHS People Pulse survey, which is fully anonymous. It asks how supported, informed, motivated or anxious you may feel, and what support would make the biggest difference to your experience at work. To ensure your voice is heard simply complete the short survey here or scan the QR code below.
The results of the survey will feature in the following month's staff briefing.
