The latest Sport England Active Lives Survey shows that more Manchester adults are moving more than ever before.
-
76.4% of adults are now active for at least 30 minutes a week - the highest level ever recorded for our city
-
66.3% of adults are doing 150+ minutes of activity each week
- Inactivity has fallen to 23.6% - the lowest level since 2017
- We're also now above the national average for active adults.
These results show that investment in local sport, leisure centres, community activities and opportunities to get active is helping more people move more, feel better and live healthier lives.
This National Fitness Day, we're celebrating everyone who is finding ways to be active, whether that's at the gym, walking the dog, cycling to work, joining a class or taking part in community sport.
Hear from Cllr Shazia Butt on what these results mean for Manchester. Full video here.

Don't miss your chance to celebrate your sporting hero!
Nominations for the Manchester Sports Awards 2026 are closing soon, and we want to hear about the incredible people, clubs, schools and projects making a difference through sport and physical activity across Manchester.
Maybe it’s the volunteer who gives up their evenings to keep a local club running. The coach who brings out the best in everyone. A young athlete achieving brilliant things. Or a community project creating opportunities for people to get active.
This is your chance to make sure their hard work, dedication and impact are recognised.
Nominations close at midnight on Sunday 27 September 2026, so don't leave it too late.
Help us shine a spotlight on the people who make Manchester's sporting community so special. The nomination form can be found here.

Next week marks Falls Prevention Week 2026.
Over the week,. we'll be shining a spotlight on how staying active can help older adults prevent falls and maintain strength, balance, and confidence.
The Manchester Physical Activity Referral Service (PARS) supports residents with tailored sessions, gentle low-impact classes, and strength & conditioning. So stay tuned to our social channels next week, we’ll be sharing videos from PARS sessions, alongside gentle exercises to do at home.
We also want to highlight the KOKU app. The app contains personalised strength and balance exercises for ageing well.
The app is free to download and accredited by the NHS, providing self-managed health care for older adults and NHS approved preventative treatment for health and social care commissioners. Access it on the App Store or Google Play Store.
Strong, steady, and active! Helping inspire Manchester to get active.

Moonlit Miles is returning this autumn at Platt Fields Park, bringing together Manchester's running community, community groups and partners to help people feel safer and more confident being active during the darker months.
Thursday 22 October - 6pm-9pm
Moonlit Miles is open to everyone and aims to bring together Manchester's diverse running community, local organisations and residents to share knowledge, promote personal safety and encourage people to stay active during the darker evenings.
The event will feature a community event village, partners offering advice and support, and a welcoming 3km run designed to connect people with local running opportunities.
As part of the event, we will be encouraging participants to wear lights, glow accessories and illuminated running gear during the 3km run to help light up the park and create a powerful visual statement in support of women's safety.
For anyone interested in learning more about the event, there is a video from the first Moonlit Miles event available on YouTube here, giving a flavour of the atmosphere, activities and impact of the event.
We hope you can join us as we bring together Manchester's running community to light up the park and champion safer, more inclusive spaces for everyone.
