Spotlight Role: Social Worker
Have you thought of a career in Social Work?
Social workers help to protect vulnerable children and adults from harm or abuse, and support people to live independently. A social worker’s role is to listen to and support individuals, families, and communities, helping them find solutions to challenges and promoting their human rights and wellbeing. Social workers also protect people from harm when necessary. Social workers will usually work with a lot of different people at any one time and they often specialise in a particular field of work for example learning disabilities, children in need and child protection, domestic abuse, homelessness, criminal justice and forensic social work.
It’s a career rooted in compassion and resilience. In a nutshell, social work is about helping people navigate life’s toughest challenges whether that’s safeguarding vulnerable adults, supporting mental health recovery, or guiding families through crises. Social workers step in when life feels overwhelming, offering hope and practical solutions.
Here's how you can get into Social Work:
Education
Undergraduate BA in Social Work (3 years)
Postgraduate MA (2 years)
Degree Apprenticeship (3 years) or a Step up to Social Work programme.

Entry Requirements
A-levels for undergraduate
2:1 degree for postgraduate, and enhanced DBS check for all routes.
Registration
After qualifying, register with Social Work England to practice legally.
Practical Experience
All routes include placements in at least two practice settings.
Volunteering
For you to gain skills and experience to be a Social Worker, you could find volunteering opportunities through the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) and Do IT.
The skills needed to be a social worker include:
Problem solving skills to advise people on the best support for them.
Digital skills to keep records and find information online.
The ability to stay calm under pressure.
Team working skills to work with other social care and health professionals such as social workers and housing officers.
