World Book Day Highlights
Once again, World Book Day 2024 was an exciting buzz of author and community events celebrating a love of reading. Read Manchester gifted over 5,500 World Book Day books via partnerships with libraries, schools and Literacy Champion events, including a book giveaway at Wythenshawe Forum. We were very excited to host authors Josh Silver at two high schools and Nick Sharratt, working his magic for 500 primary school children.
Head over to Manchester Libraries Blog to read more about the day.

Read Manchester HQ makeover
Our book gifting headquarters has benefitted from a fantastic glow up! A group of talented local young people form M13 Youth Project, designed and painted the shutters alongside project lead Jamie. The design features images from the cover of Dune, infamous characters Sherlock Holmes and Dracula, as well as representations of manga characters and the octopus from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Huge thanks to everyone involved, including Street Style Surgery...we LOVE the transformation!

Pupil Ambassadors select Transition Read
This year’s Transition Read for Y6 pupils beginning high school in September, has been selected by a group of high school readers. The title was chosen from a shortlist of six amazing books, reflecting young people's experiences and exploring emotions connected to change. In partnership with Manchester City Council Education, the initiative has been a huge success over the last five years, prompting discussion of feelings and offering reassurance during what can be a tricky time of transition. Keep an eye on our social media channels for an announcement of the book coming soon.

Earlier in the year, a competition was launched to design a brand-new library card to celebrate Central Library’s 90th anniversary taking place in the summer. Hundreds of entries were received for the three age categories ranging from 5 to 16 years. Shortlisted entries were decided by a panel of judges, including award winning illustrator and Read Manchester Literacy Champion, Ian Morris. The winners will be guests of honour at a special birthday celebration held at Central Library on Saturday 16 June. See the winning entries on our blog (coming soon!).

As part of Start for Life, the home learning campaign which encourages parents and guardians to chat, play and read more with their children, our partners at the National Literacy Trust have launched a brand-new walk and talk trail. Filled with hints and tips for talking to babies and children whilst out and about, the trail encourages learning new words and developing language skills. Early Years Project Manager Claire Rollinson has been visiting local libraries and community events to promote and hand out copies of the trail. Download your copy here.

See Myself in Books is an ongoing programme with Manchester primary schools, aiming to vary literacy resources and promote ethnic diversity in the classroom. Participating schools receive a collection of 25 books accompanied by teaching resources, raising awareness of the importance of representation, with a range of characters, authors and illustrators from varied backgrounds. This February saw a further 19 collections delivered to local schools, bringing the total number to 55, with plans to collaborate with a further 85 schools if funding can be secured. Read Manchester now has 106 active volunteer Literacy Champions including 25 Youth volunteers, across the city. Over the last year, they have contributed nearly 3,000 hours (about 4 months) of precious time, inspiring a love of reading and all things literacy in their communities.
This dedicated Literacy Champion manages several Little Libraries in her community, helping us distribute books to those who need them the most. Rachel says, "I became a Literacy Champion to encourage the community, children in particular, to read and talk about books, and to get excited about reading and characters. Books are the source of all knowledge and can really help you gain new experiences and navigate life. We are always learning."

We're thrilled to be working in partnership with Empathy Lab UK to once again host their exclusive in-person live author event in Manchester. We’ll be taking over the award-winning Stoller Hall on 5 June sharing our empathy resolutions with three amazing children’s authors, hosted by brilliant poet Paul Jenkins. Up to 400 lucky primary school children will be attending, each receiving a free book in their empathy goodie bag on the day.
