Primary to High school Transition Read
Read Manchester’s fourth city-wide Year 6 transition read is now underway! Last year’s book choice – The Lion Above the Door by Onjali Rauf – proved so popular that once again, this brilliant book is being given to every year 6 pupil in Manchester. That’s 8,000 books for 144 primary schools! The Lion Above the Door’s story covers themes about friendships, fitting in and family and is perfect for Read Manchester’s See Myself in Books campaign which champions representation in books.

Summer holiday bookgifting
Gifting free books to families is a huge part of Read Manchester's approach to promoting reading for pleasure. This summer, 30,000 books have been distributed already with the help of some brilliant local partners. MCRactive is one of those partners who has made their network of local groups available to us so that we can reach even more children and young people. MCRactive are running the Holiday Activity Fund to support families facing cost-of-living difficulties this summer. Over 100 providers, including Manchester Libraries are providing fun free sessions across the city. Read Manchester are supporting HAF activity providers by supplying free books for the children attending these brilliant free sessions.

Early Years Transition Read- A Superpower Like Mine
Our brand new Transition Read from nursery to reception is a cause for celebration! Moving up to school is a big step for children, and it makes all the difference to have something in common for them to talk about. With this in mind, every child in Manchester going into reception in September has received the fantastic book ‘A Superpower Like Mine’ by Dr Ranj. Children have received the book in nursery and have taken it home to share with parents over the summer holidays. There are accompanying activity packs including the Home Activity pack which can be downloaded here at Manc Libraries blog.

Literacy Champion Update
Did you know we now have 100 amazing Literacy Champions in Manchester? The volunteering programme led by Read Manchester started in March 2022 and has gone from strength to strength. As well as helping with Read Manchester events and book gifting, volunteers have designed and delivered their own initiatives and projects.
Read Manchester wouldn’t be able to do what it does without the amazing support of the Literacy Champions. They supported us with over 2000 hours of volunteering last year. Find out more about becoming a Literacy Champion and how the team celebrated Volunteers’ Week at Literacy Champions.
