World Book Day
Read Manchester teamed up with Transport for Greater Manchester and World Book Day UK for an action-packed World Book Day. Early morning commuters across the Metrolink network were treated to free books on tram seats and for those who missed out, volunteers and Library staff were on hand with more free books at tram stops near to Central, Abraham Moss and Forum libraries. Visiting authors AM Dassu and LD Lapinski, whose books were part of the 2023 World Book Day collection, boarded the tram to give out books and treated children at two schools to visits. Back at Central library, Hannah Gold wowed over 300 primary school children with awe inspiring wild animal facts from her books. Over 10,000 books were gifted on the day! You can read more about the day’s events on the Manchester Library blog.

We rounded off 2022 by gifting over 10,000 books to our partner organisations who work with children and families in communities across the city. The cost-of-living crisis continues to adversely affect many financially, resulting in book ownership becoming less of a priority. We know it is crucial that children have access to books, especially in the early years, so it was wonderful to hear back from those who benefitted from the campaign. One child said it was the first book they had of their own; a dad commented he could never afford to buy books for his children.
“It was heartwarming to see the children's faces light up when they received their books. Reading is such an important part of a child’s development, and these books will provide endless hours of learning and enjoyment” Ruth, Know Africa

High schools were invited to apply for books to gift to pupils and lots of happy faces were posted on social media with the books. Over 4000 books were gifted to high school pupils as part of this latest campaign.

Children’s Mental Health Week
The uplifting Find Your Happy by Emily Coxhead was given out to attendees of Manchester libraries’ weekly term time Storytime sessions, raising awareness during Children’s Mental Health Week in February. The book is a joyful approach to helping young children identify different feelings. A Look for a Book event also took place the same week with Read Manchester Literacy Champions strategically placing the books in city centre locations for people to find (literally) their happy!
