Welcome to the February edition of Get Connected our Manchester Adult Education newsletter! In this edition we discuss the benefits of cycling and other exercise on the immune system, Holocaust memorial day and staying safe online.
Enjoy.
Cycling for health & wellbeing
In the last edition MAES tutor Vinay Chauhan shared his story of how he has changed his mode of travel to work and how cycling has improved his quality of life at the same time.
A recent study from Cape Town University in South Africa has proven how mild exercise can also improve our immune systems by increasing the production of bug-fighting proteins too, so not only will cycling and other exercise keep us fit, it will also stop us feeling unwell too.
So as we move into spring with milder temperatures and daylight lasting a little longer,it could be the perfect time for you to give two wheels a go too. There are several bike libraries operating across Greater Manchester - yes you read it right: just like you borrow a book, you can now also borrow a bike! Manchester’s Tower of light turns purple for a purpose
At the end of January Manchester’s 40 metre-tall Tower of Light in the city centre turned purple in order to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. Since 2001 Holocaust Memorial Day has been held annually in order to honour the millions of victims, as well as aiming to provide a moment of focus and discussion.
A council spokesperson explained, “Holocaust Memorial Day is an important day for our residents - it’s a chance to learn about the past and take action for a better future.” The guiding theme for this year’s memorial day has been ‘ordinary people’ and people across the world have been encouraged to consider how ordinary people, like you and I, can play a bigger role in challenging prejudice.
The Manchester Jewish Museum’s current exhibitions compliment this idea and they are well worth a look. With the museum now open 7 days a week and on several public transport links, it could be just the place for you to visit, learn and discover this month.
MAES stays safe online
At the start of the month tutors and learners marked Safer Internet Day by checking how safe and secure their habits were.
It is a scary fact that 62% of adults have had potentially harmful experiences online and therefore we were really grateful for our Digital Skills Team who helpfully shared some hints and tip about staying safe online.
You can click here to test how aware you are and to also learn more about preventing personal information being stolen. You can also complete a free online module on digital safety here, which will not only help you with staying safe online but also improve digital skills too.
Whilst we are on the subject of all things digital, digital safety and digital skill development is super important to us at MAES, so don’t forget you are welcome to attend any of the Digital Skill Ups. No question is too small to ask, so come along to boost your skills and connect with others.
