![MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/UKMANCHESTER/2022/12/6907180/voice-1_original.png) After what is best being politely described as a ‘challenging’ couple of years, 2022 was the year that promised, and in most cases, delivered, a sense of normality to our city, along with a return of familiarity to our personal and working everyday lives too. With the year now drawing to a close, we are presented with the opportunity to reflect on and recognise the hard-work and dedication of all those that contribute to sport, health and physical activity in Manchester. This includes (but is not limited to) all our staff, Officers, Ward Councillors, residents, partners, clubs and many more who, through collaboration and teamwork, have contributed to all the positives we’re proud of.
Whilst it is recognised that there is still lots to do, overall, this year has been immensely rewarding and positive. By continuing to forge partnerships with organisations across the city and region we will establish a platform to strengthen the MCRactive movement and help us deliver many more world-class events, health interventions, great initiatives, and activity programmes over the coming years to make sure Manchester moves more and becomes a healthier and happier city. Please find the time with your loved ones over the holiday period, recharge your batteries, and we wish all of you a very happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year! See you in 2023.

![HAF Info graphic](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/UKMANCHESTER/2022/12/6907563/infographic-gif_original.gif) From Summer 2021 - Summer 2022, MCRactive and Manchester City Council offered thousands of FREE places to children eligible for benefit related free school meals and those with no recourse to public funds; to access a variety of activities over the school holiday periods. Activities range from Sport and Physical Activities, Arts and Crafts and sometimes can include a variety of Day Trips. Aimed at local 5-16 years old in receipt of free school meals, we delivered 3,466 Sessions and 81,847 engagements to 14,572 children. MCRactive and the City Council are immensely proud of the work we have achieved over the past year, but we couldn't have done it without the hard work of local providers, volunteers and communities working tirelessly to provide free, engaging and vital activity and hot meals to disadvantaged children in our city. And we have no plans to stop anytime soon, with plans to expand the Holiday Activity Fund program even further in 2023 to ensure we reach all children in need across Manchester. Read more about the work and achievements from the past year of #HAF2022 here.

![Stay off frozen water](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/UKMANCHESTER/2022/12/6907450/picture6_original.jpg) Following the distressing recent events in Sollihul GMFRS have issued a series of warnings to the public around the dangers of frozen water Going onto frozen ponds, reservoirs, lakes and canals is dangerous and can have fatal results. While it might be tempting to walk or play on the frozen water but the ice can easily break, even if it appears thick from the bank, it becomes thinner very quickly. If a dog or other animal ventures onto the ice, or falls through it, do not go onto the ice to rescue it as you are likely to end up in the freezing water yourself and unable to help the animal, the temperature of the water is cold enough to take your breath away and lead to drowning. Similarly, never throw sticks or balls onto the ice for your dog keep them on a lead near frozen water. If you see a person or animal in trouble in icy water, stay on the bank and phone 999. Further information and resources can be found on RLSS UK’s website.
