Welcome to December’s issue of Get Connected.
This edition gives some key information about food and money, and shows you some great opportunities available in from January. Read on to find out more!
MAES really does make it happen!
The first week of December was a Make It Happen focus week, where learners worked with our specialist and dedicated team of tutors to build their confidence and skills base. The team helped the participants to increase their interview ability and develop their CV writing skills. It has been wonderful to bring people together who share a common goal and ensure they are ready and prepared to enter the working world. We are excited to hear about the jobs you will have secured in the near future.
Food for all, for less
Christmas is very much a time for eating and drinking with others, but with the cost of living crisis around it may feel more of a stretch to eat, drink and be merry.
It is a sad reality that there are 4.5 billion tonnes of food being wasted each year, with 70% of this coming from our own homes. So with food costs rising it makes sense to try and use what we have and get creative, meaning we can eat well for less.
Love Food Hate Waste has some great ways to save food, save money and save our planet. The recipes listed can help you make your food go further, suggesting interesting meals and treats you can make with ingredients you already have. Click below and see what you could try!
A step in the right direction
Money matters and as the cost of living crisis worsens an increasing number of residents may need support with managing their finances or managing debts. StepChange are a great organisation when it comes to helping people get their finances back on track. They offer free, non-judgemental and expert advice on a range of financial matters and you can access their services by clicking the link provided.
We also have this independent, accurate and reliable benefit calculator to calculate what you are entitled to and help you ensure you are receiving any help you are due. Taking a few minutes to key in your details could make a lot of difference!

New year and new Digital Skills….
January is an exciting month for the MAES Digital team who are launching two fantastic Digital Skills Level 2 courses, one at Longsight Library and one at Greenheys Learning Centre. Both of the courses will be in-person and classroom based, meaning a supportive and friendly atmosphere, where you can learn whilst connecting with others, is guaranteed.
Nazia Khan, a tutor on the Level 2 Digital skills course, explains how the course is composed of two units, one which focuses on what digital technology is and how it is used in the workplace and a second which teaches you all about using spreadsheets to process data, make charts and share information. It is a wonderful opportunity to improve your skills especially if you are looking for work or a different kind of job.
If you are interested in please click here to apply, it will only take a few minutes but - as it has for the learner pictured here - it could change your life!
