Black History Month 2022
Manchester Libraries are proud to represent the diversity of the city in our activities and events programme. Each October is Black History Month and this year we are pleased to host a series of events and activities across our libraries, listed on the library blog, with further details later in this newsletter.

We are Carnival!
The Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre and Education Trust in partnership with Manchester Libraries presents We Are Carnival! To mark the city’s celebrations of 50 years of Manchester’s Caribbean Carnival we have a series of free events for Black History Month at Manchester Central Library.
History of Carnival Workshops by Linford Sweeney
Wednesday 5 October 5.30pm age 14+ and Wednesday 26 October 2pm for families for age 10+
Carnival Party
Enjoy a Carnival party with an exhibition, film, music, family arts workshop, spoken word & food. Thursday 27 October 2pm-7pm, Manchester Central Library.

Carnival History and Crafts
Did you know that carnival was first a festival held indoors? Join this activity at a library near you to find out where the first carnivals were held and why it's so important. We will also create headdresses fit for a carnival procession. For ages 10+. Free drop in.

The History of Carnival
Join an online talk for Black History Month organised by Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society in collaboration with Archives+ and given by Linford Sweeney. The history of the Caribbean Carnival is a complex one with great historical and cultural significance. Linford Sweeney is a Black history educator, genealogist, and author.

Fun Palaces
Manchester Libraries will join hundreds of Fun Palaces nationally and internationally in October with free and fun activities for all. Join the fun at Manchester Central Library, Longsight Library, Forum Library , Wythenshawe and North City Library in Harpurhey.
Saturday 1 October 2 – 4pm. Fun Palace events are free!
Autumn half-term fun
Head to your local library for awesome, autumn spooky fun this half-term. From Monday 24 to Friday 28 October we've got bags of arts and crafts to keep children entertained plus a cool STEM activity making a fan-powered kit car.

Halloween Sunday Funday
Enjoy an evening of frightful family fun when Central Library opens its doors for a Halloween Sunday spectacular. Fearsome face painters, a silent disco, creepy crafts and maybe a few treats and scary surprises. Fancy dress is absolutely encouraged – so dust down your capes, polish your broomsticks and enjoy a night of ghoulish delight.
£10 per family - maximum in a family on 1 ticket is 3 children and 2 adults. Sunday 30 October Visit the Library Live website to book.
Start Up Networking Morning
We've launched a new series of monthly networking meetups. Come and meet the BIPC team, ask questions, find out about upcoming events, make connections with other entrepreneurs, and find out how you can use the Centre to give your business the best possible chance of success.

Manchester Literature Festival is back with a bang
Manchester Literature Festival, 7 - 23 October 2022, presents an exciting line-up of incredible writers, world class actors, broadcasters and comedians, dynamic poets, exclusive pairings and emerging talent, taking place at vibrant venues across the city including Central Library. Kit de Waal
Without Warning and Only Sometimes is Kit de Waal’s memoir of a childhood of opposites and extremes. Their mother worked multiple jobs; their father splurged on fancy clothes. Kit is the author of My Name Is Leon, shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award and adapted for TV. Hosted by Ellah P Wakatama.

Paterson Joseph in Conversation
Georgian London is not a safe place for a young Black man, so how does Charles Ignatius Sancho meet the King, write and play acclaimed music, become the first Black person to vote in Britain and lead the fight to end slavery? Paterson Joseph tells a story hidden for 300 years. Paterson is best known for his roles in Vigil, Peep Show and Noughts & Crosses. Hosted by Ellah P Wakatama.

Monica Ali
Monica Ali visits MLF to celebrate her brilliant and incredibly funny new novel Love Marriage, her first book in a decade. Yasmin’s engaged to fellow Junior Doctor Joe, but when they bring the two families together cracks appear in everyone’s lives. Monica is the author of five novels which have been translated into 26 languages. Her debut, Brick Lane, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.

Nihal Arthanayake: Let’s Talk
Award-winning BBC broadcaster Nihal Arthanayake brings a defibrillator to our ailing ability to connect through conversation. He will share with us all how we can become better conversationalists, bridge divides, and become less lonely. Nihal has built a platform of 1.2 million listeners a week on BBC Radio 5 Live and is the winner of two Sony Gold Awards. Hosted by poet Andrew McMillan.

Re:Sound Project performance
Watch Manchester City of Literature’s Re:Sound Project live at Central Library. Afrocats, Kyso and Pendleton College worked with Yussuf Maleem, Jade Parker and Jaydev Mistry in Greater Manchester Sound Archives. The artists will be performing their creations live.

Synagogue Nights 2022
Manchester Jewish Museum will once again be celebrating Jewish music and art with our new season of Synagogue Nights: intimate performances in our stunning 1874 Synagogue. From the mellow sounds of jazz and entertaining comedy shows to the greatest of classical hits, we are showcasing Jewish art in all its diversity.
