Welcome to our September edition which sees us welcome in a new term at MAES.
This issue has features on some of the new courses starting at MAES, as well as information about financial help available for Greater Manchester’s residents as the cost of living continues to rise.
Ready, set, learn!
It’s been a busy few weeks at centres as learners across the city have enrolled on a variety of new courses to help them reach their goals. If you have not yet enrolled on a course with Manchester Adult Education it’s not too late! Just visit our website explore our courses and apply.
Heena Lal, who studies at Abraham Moss, has just started an Entry 3 ESOL For Work course, with hopes of gaining qualifications to help her find a job in customer service or childcare. Although she initially felt nervous and shy about coming to a centre, she is glad to have taken the steps and joined a class.
Heena explained, “at first I was so scared but now I feel very good in the classroom. The teacher is kind and patient. My classmates are friendly too and we share respect with each other. After lessons I am motivated to try and speak English with my son and husband, using some of the new words.”
Heena is also taking a Digital Skills course in order to develop her computer knowledge. “I want to be able to speak fluently with people I meet and also understand more about technology so this opportunity is my dream.”
We wish all of our learners well as they start their 2022-2023 journey with MAES and look forward to sharing their stories as the year progresses.
Heena applied through the MAES website, so if you’re interested in joining a course too, click to find out more.

Shining the spotlight on social care
This autumn sees the exciting launch of some new and exciting courses at MAES, including a Level 3 Certificate in Health and Social Care. After last year’s success of the Level 2 course, we can now offer the next step, which will help learners develop their expertise and secure employment in roles such as care support workers and healthcare assistants. As we also know how hectic life can be there are a range of study options available to suit different lifestyles and routines, including online-only options.
Course tutor Kelly Ferguson explains how she was ‘delighted’ last year to see all of her learners reach their full potential and looks forward to helping others this year.

Getting around for less
There’s great news for all residents of Greater Manchester as bus fares have been reduced, making travel around the region much more possible. The new pricing system means a single journey will cost no more than £2 for adults and £1 for those aged 5-16. You can find out more about this new scheme here and also use the website to plan your future journeys.
In addition to this MAES has a wonderful Learner Support Service which can support learners with their travel costs. Providing you live more than 2 miles from your learning centre you could be entitled a free bus ticket to attend classes. You can also ask your tutor for more information.
Keeping your costs down
The rising costs of living are worrying for us all so The Citizen’s Advice Manchester have put together some great hints and tips to save. Did you know you can save around £55 per year just by turning your TV off at the wall? We didn’t! See what else you can learn from this list which focuses on how you can lower your energy usage whilst remaining warm, clean and comfortable.
Manchester Council also has a useful page of information about financial support available to residents to help you understand what you could be entitled to.
Skill up with MAES
We are now offering free drop-in sessions across centres for residents to develop their digital skills. These digital skill-up sessions are tailored around individual needs and motivations and delivered in a friendly atmosphere. There is no long term commitment, with the sessions instead being a chance to learn how to better-use your device, practise using different programs, or ask questions to a qualified tutor.
Attending a Digital Skill Up session can help develop confidence, resilience and adaptability for everyday digital skills
You can contact MAES tutor Anna Thurston (anna.thurston@manchester.gov.uk) for more information or visit the Digital Skills page on our website for more information
