Background to the Health and Social Care Sector
The health and social care sector includes health service jobs in organisations such as the NHS and private medical centres, the social care sector and biotechnology. There are also the pharmaceutical industries, which work on the development and manufacture of drugs and ways of making diagnoses.
This sector is made up of hospitals, doctors’ surgeries, dental practices, the ambulance service, nursing homes, residential care homes, local authorities, and other health related provision.
Skills Needed in this Sector
Understandably, the key word to consider when contemplating a career in this sector is ‘care’. People who work in this sector truly care about helping other people. Without that level of concern and desire to make a difference, it is impossible to succeed in the health and social care world.
In order to thrive in these careers, you need to have the ability to build relationships with patients and service users. It is essential that people trust you, and therefore patience, friendliness and good communication skills are needed. These careers are some of the most rewarding you can pursue but can also be the most challenging emotionally. You certainly need to be genuinely compassionate and caring, but you need to be thick-skinned too.

Yes! We offer an in-depth induction plan, which will involve you seeing how different services work within the MLCO (Manchester Local Care Organisation – a partnership between health and social care in Manchester).
You will shadow a wide variety of support workers who have done the role for different lengths of time, whilst completing classroom training, e-learning and getting your health and social care qualifications including the care certificate.
You may have experience and skills that you have picked up in your day-to-day lives that are transferrable to working in health and social care. Have you looked after a family member, supported a neighbour, helped out in your child’s school? Any of these roles will mean you have developed skills that you can use in a health and social care role.

No, you do not need to drive to either of the roles. Manchester has great transport links and Manchester City Council have lots of support in traveling to work, including using the bus, Metrolink and cycle to work schemes.
In Reablement, you will be reimbursed for any travel expense you incur whilst traveling within work time. As you are assigned to a rota, your calls will be within close proximity to each other when possible. In DSAS, we will try to keep you local to where this is possible. If you do drive and are happy to, some of the people we support have access to their own vehicles and you may be asked to drive those vehicles.

Disability Supported Accommodation Service
The team supports citizens with Learning and Physical Disabilities to live in their own home, living as independently as possible, supporting choice and developing skills. The level of support will differ greatly from citizen to citizen depending on their need and the activities that they may take part in. The Disability Supported Accommodation Service supports citizens in 39 locations across the city of Manchester.
There is also a Short Breaks Service which provides support to citizens with learning and physical disabilities as part of respite, across 3 locations in Manchester.
Working within the service is very rewarding, one of our Support Workers commented "The best part about being a support worker is the satisfaction of knowing you can make a difference in somebody’s life and helping people to achieve their goals"
You have the opportunity to build a rapport with the citizens you support and establish a valued and trusted relationship. One of the Short Break citizens recently provided some feedback: “Staff make me feel safe and put me first. They make me feel confident and improve how I feel about myself”
Each location has a rota that has been designed to best support the needs of the citizens. These rotas cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Some locations will have waking nights in place, others will have sleep ins (this means staff sleep at the location). Staff will work an average of 35 hours a week and you will be given your rotas 6 weeks in advance. 17.5 hour part-time posts will be considered in some locations.
