Neighbourhood Investment Funds (NIF) for Community Projects
Did you know that £20,000 of neighbourhood investment funding (NIF) is available to every area (ward) in Manchester each year to help groups carry out events and activities that benefit people in their local neighbourhood?
For example, BeLongsight was established in 2016 by a small group of residents in Longsight to tackle environmental issues in the area. Since then it has received funding on several occasions from the Neighbourhood Investment Fund and has been nominated twice for the Manchester Be Proud Awards. Their work greening up neglected alleyways has inspired other local community greening projects in Longsight. (photo courtesy of Roxana Allison)
Other examples of projects funded by NIF grants with inspiring stories include Withington Walls a community street art project run by volunteers. The team behind the works have also appeared on BBC Match Of The Day!
and, from Philips Park Cemetery in Beswick, there is (as reported on ITV Granada News) Children Grieve Too
If even more encouragement to apply is needed here are images from two more projects funded by NIF grants. The popular Wythenshawe Games....
And last but by no means least this lovely community garden in Harpurhey...
You can find out how to apply for a NIF grant for your project at www.manchester.gov.uk/nif
Making a difference in Neighbourhoods this Summer
We all have a responsibility to keep our neighbourhood clean, with the council, residents and visitors all having a part to play.
As you are out and about this Summer please do take action to help, whether you’re reporting problems and picking up small pieces of litter or taking your rubbish home after a trip to the park, a residents’ group litter picking an area or an individual who simply picks up the occasional crisp packet, even the small things will make a big difference.
Report problems where needed and help us keep streets neat. Thank you for doing what you can and by recycling as much as you can, you are also directly helping to keep costs down, which has an impact on council tax.
You can report litter and/ or fly tipping online here
Tackling Climate Change in Neighbourhoods
As part of Manchester City Council’s commitment to supporting Manchester's ambition to become a zero-carbon city by 2038 at the latest, each Neighbourhood Team now has a designated Climate Change Officer.
Our Climate Change Officers are working in our wards to support residents, partners and colleagues to deliver a range of projects and initiatives that will help Manchester play its full part in tackling the global climate challenge.
Take a look at how Manchester is working together to tackling climate change across the City and how you can play your part.
COVID Recovery
Since the start of the pandemic the Neighbourhood Teams have played a vital role in supporting residents across the city. For example, we worked on the MCC CV19 helpline which was set up last year, offering support, guidance, signposting callers and referring to the food response team & other support services.
The team also led in developing a response to surge testing in areas of the city where there have been concerns regarding new variants, coordinating large teams of volunteers who engaged with residents and establishing additional testing sites.
Now we are working with residents, businesses and partners as Manchester ‘recovers from COVID’
To keep in touch with what’s happening across the city as we bounce back you can sign up to the Welcome Back Manchester bulletin.
And don’t forget that there is lots of COVID Information on our the manchester City Council website
What to watch out for-
Don't forget there's Allsorts to do in Manchester this summer!
It's National Recycling Week Week 20th September to 26th September. This years theme is Step It Up.
