Children and Families August Newsletter
The weather may be a mixed bag this summer, but our welcome is always sunny in Libraries! If you haven’t joined the Summer Reading Challenge already, what are you waiting for? You can sign up at your local library for free and you’ll receive a special Collector Poster to track your reading. When you’ve read six books, you can claim your certificate and medal. On your marks, get set...READ!

Summer Reading Challenge – there's Loads to Do this summer!
As well as fantastic books for you to borrow from our Libraries, we also have some great activities for you to enjoy. Check out our activity listing on the new Loads to Do website, which includes great activities from Libraries and a whole host of other activity providers too! As well as activities in Libraries, we also have a great online offer. Our videos are released at 11.00 am on Facebook as follows:
Tuesdays: We’re going on a Story Hunt -
Join the amazing storyteller John Kirk, as he takes you on a virtual storyhunt. These sessions are suitable for little ones and are nature themed, just like the Summer Reading Challenge itself. Take a trip through the Oceans, Rainforest, Countryside and go on a Polar Bear expedition. Remember that you can join our Mini Summer Reading Challenge in Libraries too.
Wednesdays - Join us as we showcase our fabulous librarian Ann Marie (11 Aug), meet author Rashmi Sirdeshpande (18 Aug), meet Dr Duck by Steve Smallman (25 Aug) and Draw Along with Rob Biddulph on 1 September.
Thursdays: Draw Along with author/illustrator Steve Smallman - Get your pencil case at the ready and draw along with Steve. Each week Steve will be showing you how to draw a different animal.

Book Lovers Day Tuesday 9 August
It’s safe to say, here at Manchester Libraries we love books. And we know you do too! The Reading Agency has created a booklist to celebrate Book Lovers Day on 9th August 2021. This list includes titles for toddlers, children, teens and young adults, all about the wonderfulness of words, brilliant bookshops and our love of libraries. There are also books that we think are just perfect for inspiring a life-long love of reading.

Media Cubs
Do you aspire to be a reporter or journalist? Why not find out what it's all about at a Media Cubs pop up TV studio and Newsroom. You’ll get a reporter handbook and a press pass -and the best thing is that it's all free during August!
Venues: Manchester Central Library (Mondays), Avenue Library (Tuesdays), Beswick Library (Wednesdays), Longsight Library (Thursdays), Forum Library (Fridays). All 1:00pm to 3:30pm.
Suitable for 7 to 11 year olds. You must book your place to attend at Team@mediacubs.co.uk

Reading Rascals Reading Group
Are you aged 8-11 looking for a fun reading group to join? We will be running Reading Rascals on a Saturday afternoon at Central Library once a month. We talk about books, do activities and it’s a great way to make new friends. We are signing up new members on August 28th at Central Library 2 to 3pm.
You can meet Angela & Mona and take part in some special back to school crafts. You can email us to book a place. Hope to see you soon!

Park life
There’s lots to keep you busy in our Manchester parks this summer holiday. Why not explore your fantastic local park and find out things you never knew existed! There’s a whole range of trails to follow in libraries and parks. You’ll see some friendly faces from libraries popping up at park events too, and you can find copies of the trails at your local library, as well as the chance to join in the Summer Reading Challenge Wild World Heroes of course.

National Football Museum in Manchester
Lily Parr: Make a Football Timeline Play your part in creating a huge community artwork inspired by the National Football Museum’s new display all about trailblazing footballer Lily Parr! Artists Rosanna Frith-Salem and Billy Colours have created several stunning artworks honouring Lily's impact on the game and want your help to make another masterpiece in the museum on Friday 20th August 11am-1pm
