Take 10 on 10 May for Mental Health Awareness Week
Mental Health Awareness Week takes place this year from 10 to16 May, with a theme of nature, which has been such a comfort in a year where we have had limited travel and chances to explore. Reading is another support for our mental wellbeing and we're inviting you to take part in our #Take10ToRead Challenge, as part of the Connecting Stories campaign.
Research shows that reading can help make you feel calmer, reduce stress and improve concentration. By getting involved in the Take 10 challenge, you will help us promote the positive effects that taking just ten minutes a day to read can have on our mental health and wellbeing. Schools, authors, businesses, families and community partners are invited to ‘drop everything and read’ at 10am on 10 May to promote reading for wellbeing.

Children's e-books and audio books
Unexpected Twist
Written and narrated by Michael Rosen, suitable for children aged 8+
Shona and her dad are moving house, and at Shona's new school, the rules are pretty confusing; she keeps getting into trouble without realising! It's a lot like how it is for Oliver Twist, that boy she's reading about in English class.
After Shona is unexpectedly given a mobile phone, she begins to suspect there's something fishy about the new boys she's met. Where did the phone come from? And some gifts, she soon learns, aren't exactly free.
Download your eAudiobooks for free from BorrowBox with your library card! If you don't have a Manchester Libraries card all you need to do is register here then use the temporary library number you are given.

Earth Day 22 April
Earth Day has a theme of Restore our Earth and looks at how we can make changes as we return to everyday life more mindfully. Read our highlights from one of the many earth and nature-themed books we have available for you to borrow from Libraries.
How to Help a Hedgehog and Protect a Polar Bear by Jess French, illustrated by Angela Keoghan
Learn how you can save endangered animals and make the world a better place, too!
From beetles and butterflies, to puffins and polar bears, animals and habitats all over the world need our protection. In this beautifully illustrated book, children (and adults!) can learn about thirteen different habitats - gardens, hedgerows, heathlands, woodlands, highlands, wetlands, the coastline, freshwater, oceans, savannahs, jungles and mountains - and simple everyday ways to protect them.
Find out how to help hedgehogs in your own back garden or spread the word about endangered animals further from home, as you discover all the little things you can do to make a big difference.
