The wait is FINALLY over! We’re pleased to welcome Manchester back and reopen the doors of our gyms, pools and leisure centres across the city. From Wednesday 2 December, there will be more opportunities for grassroots sport and activities with leisure facilities now able to open for the benefit of local communities. Under all tiers, organised sport and physical activity can return along with organised activity for elite athletes, under 18s and disabled people. MCRactive will work collaboratively across the city, with all key stakeholders and sector leaders to understand any changes and help as many Mancunians participate in their chosen activity, in a COVID-safe way. It’s International Volunteering Week from 5 December and to celebrate, we’re supporting MCRVIP’s initiative aimed at driving volunteering within our local communities across Manchester and giving time to help others. Not only will this provide help and assistance to people or areas in need, but there is also a significant benefit to volunteers themselves, often helping you to find friends, connect with the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career! There’s lots of opportunities to volunteer to support Manchester residents during the COVID-19 crisis. Get involved to do something satisfying and that adds to your CV and helps you gain new skills. Whether it is digital, community or even sewing skills, there's something here for everyone! Visit MCRVIP for more info including how to register.

Our Winning Hearts and Mind Community Development Fieldworkers in Collyhurst have been connecting with the local community with their Knit-Tastic project. Working in partnership with Whitley Road Medical Centre, Stacy and Matthew have been able to reach residents across North Manchester. Out of the residents contacted, 68% got involved in Knit-Tastic, many of which were either a complete novice or had not knitted since they were at school. The packs were offered for free in this pandemic in hopes that they could reignite knitting as a passion for residents and give them something to focus on.
Lilly, a Collyhurst resident said: "I’ve really enjoyed the packs and it’s been very good for me, as I live on my own and it’s given me something different to do". Shelly who has also taken part in the Knit-Tastic project said: “I can’t do much, so I’ve been knitting 10 lines a day, this is because I have limited mobility but it’s been great for me and it’s making me want to do more knitting and less time spent just watching television”. Being able to work alongside the local GP practice to offer the resident the activity and Knit-Tastic packs has had a positive impact in short space of time.

From 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day, join Women’s Aid in working towards a future where violence against women and girls is no longer tolerated or legitimised. We're supporting their 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign to end violence against women and girls and bringing people together from across the globe. You can help spread awareness by sharing your exercise to collectively walk 1600 miles across the 16 days. By simply walking, running or exercising, tweet your steps, minutes or miles to @MancWomensAid using #WalkingAgainstDVA and #16DaysOfActivism. We want to ensure that no survivor faces domestic abuse alone. Click here for more information.
