New name for Ombudsman

We recently changed our name to the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman.

We did this to help make it clear to everyone that we look at complaints about all areas of adult social care – including privately arranged or funded care.

Adverse Findings Notice Issued

We published a rare public notice against a Wembley care provider, after it refused to put things right for the son of a woman in its care.

The man complained about the homecare services provided to his mother by Peepal Care Limited. Our investigation found the provider at fault and made recommendations to remedy the situation, including apologising to the man.

The provider refused to do this so we published an Adverse Findings Notice to hold it to account.

Mental Capacity Act and DoLS

We have issued a report looking at some of the common problems we see with the implementation of Mental Capacity Assessments and the Deprivation of Liberties safeguards. These include not carrying out - or delaying - assessments to determine whether someone has the capacity to make decisions for themselves, poor decision making when deciding on someone’s best interests, and not involving friends and families in the decision process.

The report also gives good practice advice and guidance for both councils and care providers on how to get things right when working with people who may lack mental capacity.

NEW! Open courses available

We offer two different complaint handling courses to care providers: a half-day course aimed at frontline staff and a full-day course for managers and other staff who investigate and resolve complaints.

Courses are for eight to 15 people and will be held at your venue. We also run open courses that delegates from different care providers can attend. 

Our next open course is on 11th January 2018 in York.
